King Salmon (łuk chao) smokes in a cache in Gwichyaa Zhee (Fort Yukon), Alaska. Often referred to as Yukon gold, the Gwich’in spend the month of July fishing for King Salmon, with fish wheels or nets, on the Yukon River. For the Gwich’in the only adequate food is food that comes from the land—fish, caribou, moose, and berries, making up 80% of their diet. #gwichin #salmon #yukonriver #fortyukon #cache #foodsecurity (at Fort Yukon, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0qux8IhcJz/?igshid=isacj7f4zctt

LAST CALL – Please take a moment to TEXT ARCTIC to 40649 to submit a public comment to BLM. The Trump Administration is quickly moving forward with their plan to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development, a move that would destroy the Gwich’in and Inupiaq way of life and their future generations. Not only is this one of the last wild places on earth, it is sacred land to the Gwich’in. As Traditional Chief of Arctic Village, Trimble Gilbert, said, “We treat caribou and other creatures with reverence because, without them, we would not survive…To my people, wilderness is not a luxury or indulgence. It is a necessity. We feed our families and sustain our culture by living on the land, taking only what we need, and caring for our clean air, clean water and abundant wildlife.” Stand with them!!! #defendthesacredak #defendthesacred #arcticnationalwildliferefuge #gwichin #defend (at Arctic Village, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/kerioberly/p/Bu8-hctBrNj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2pgwsey0re33
