Been rotating the thought of GX's overall theme of "growing up", how each season contect to it and how it actually connect so well to s2's themes and specifically, on the matter of efforts and choices.
One of the important difference between childhood and adulthood is that adults have to make choice and effort to build their life. A child's life is guided, and choices are most often made on their behalf (for the better and for the worst).
An exemple is friendship: as a child friendships are often maintained through structures. Family, school, activities, and so on. But by growing up friendships need to be actively maintained and effort has to be put on reaching for friends and caring for them. This is one of the repeated element of the season 2 of GX. Judai making an effort to reach for Manjoume and Asuka when he previously let things happen. It parrallels Edo's arc that ends with him chosing to find Saiou after their relations was degrading from being stuck.
For Edo and Saiou, the "structure" is both their job but also the reason they met: destiny. Much like parent organising play dates, it was the reason they first talked and what Edo held onto to prove Saiou would remain in his life. Destiny filled that role parents would have had in their life: making choices in their stead. Something they needed as children but, as they grow up, turns into a prison. So, when Edo and Saiou oppose both the LoD and fate, they oppose the structure controlling them and instrread chose for themself, make an effort toward their own life.
And there are many such exemples through the season. Ryo rejecting the structure he was a part of to define his own purpose. Judai feeling demotivated by dueling until he finds why he chosed it in the first place. Misawa finding resolution when he chose to live his own life rather than chosing others.
There's more to say, especially in comparing for other season, but this hasn't left me.
