So I’m home from Gypsy. I wasn’t blown away or anything and it most certainly wasn’t worth the money I had to pay for it (though I’m glad to be supporting local theatre).

I know exactly why I didn’t really enjoy the show though. All of the older adult actors were not good whatsoever. Mama Rose needs to be played by a really really strong actress and the woman who performed it was just.... weak. The vocals weren’t strong enough, she tripped over her lines a lot in the first act, and her acting didn’t go any deeper than face value. She was over the top in a very corny way and since she kept messing up lines, it just made her seem very amateurish even though she’s been singing and acting with the company for 10 years (she’s also a singing teacher). However, her “Rose’s Turn” was a shining moment for her.

The man who played Herbie wasn’t a strong singer or dancer, but his acting was good for the part he was given. He was pretty believable as Herbie. The ensemble males were also just very amateurish and over the top as well.

Any time it was none of the older adults were onstage (which obviously didn’t happen much), I enjoyed the scenes so much more. For instance, “If Momma Was Married” was one of my favorite scenes. The actresses who played Louise and June were phenomenal. (Baby June was also one of my favorite performers in the whole show. She was so cute!!!!!! And it was her first production!!!).

I need to either watch the movie or a bootleg of it somewhere else to see if I would like it better. Because it’s not like I didn’t enjoy the story. In fact, I got a bit emotional at the end which I didn’t really expect. So maybe I’ll like it better next time.
