Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia.
Haigani Donoyan and Tanya Hovhannisyan were poets who perished in the 1988 Spitak Earthquake when the city of Leninkan (now Gyumri) Armenia, was completely destroyed, killing 50,000 and injuring 130,000 people in a matter of minutes. There was a conspiracy theory at the time that the Soviet authorities had detonated a nuclear bomb underground from their military base that was nearby; the destruction was on that level of magnitude.
Then the USSR collapsed and it was because of the earthquake that I ended up in Gyumri in 1995 as a Peace Corps volunteer. At the time nothing had been rebuilt, rubble was all that was left and most of the bodies had been abandoned where they had been crushed and buried since there was no money for the giant earthmovers needed to recover them. The hut that I lived in was built on top of the ruins of the previous house, whose tenants, I later found out, were still buried in the debris under my floorboards.
I never met Haigani or Tanya but I met some of their friends who survived and shared their poems with me. I quote a line from each in Armenian and French in the song. Diana Der-Hovanessian includes both of their work in her incredible anthology, The Other Voice: Armenian Women's Poetry Through The Ages, which I highly recommend.
