From August 27th to September 6th, I am heading back to Central Asia for a new 11-day trip hunting down architecture (and much more) through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, organized together with Soviet Tours.
The journey starts in Tashkent, two days among Soviet modernist masterpieces, kaleidoscopic mosaics, legendary metro stations, plus the giant solar furnace in Parkent. Then southwest by train to Bukhara, one of the great Silk Road cities, for its ancient marvels such as the Po-i-Kalyan complex (with the minaret that impressed even Genghis Khan) and the Ark, before moving on to Samarkand to see other amazing symbols of Timurid grandeur, like the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, the Registan and the Gur-e-Amir.
We will then cross the border into Tajikistan, enjoying the psychedelic mosaics of Panjakent, the turquoise lakes and mountain villages of the Fann Mountains, before heading north towards the huge Lenin statue atop the dam of Istaravshan, then on to the vibrant Khujand with its Soviet architecture and lively bazaar.
I've been to the region to document architecture for my book Soviet Asia and went back for another tour in 2023. Trust me, we had a lot of fun! We will explore these places together, supported by very skilled local guides, and I'll also be giving evening talks on architecture and photography.
