Gladious. That is both the scientific and common name for these flowers. A name derived from the Latin word “gladius,” they are often referred to as “sword lilies” due to its straight, piercing stalk and flower spike.

It is said that, upon presenting this flower to another, it indicates how the receiver has pierced the sender’s heart. Which is the sword that pierced through? Is it the one which you carry unsheathed, running head on into the injustice of the open world? Or another…of my own doing?

What is one to do with all this trembling? An open wound from which I can feel my own heat rise? My mind blurs and morphs perception.

Whatever it may be, I will take what swelling pain I can pour from these dark trenches and turn it into my own, staking your name to take responsibility — and this will be how I stay by your side, sword in hand and in hand.
