My failures are just here to show me that I used the wrong path, no more self pity, I'm going to do great, not everytime but I will try.
Have you ever wondered how you know something you don’t remember learning?
Hello humans,
I’ve been listening to and audiobook from Sal Khan of KhanAcademy.com and I have to say the book is fascinating. I happen to work in a world focused on next-level education and training but even for a person who cares-not about the end user engagement and usability there are some profound lessons and ideas that anyone could appreciate. One of which the simple concept of lifelong learning. I hear folks saying “I learn something new everyday” or “learning is life” and while these are true statements they generalize what it means to learn. The brain plasticity or malleability that allows the Nero-pathways to be formed and myelinated are a life long functions of the brain, yet most folks don’t really create the pathways at the speed and a volume that they did when they were in school, or just out of college learning how to be a grown up. So the difference between learning and learning deeply is about as profound as can be.
One example of this is a great metaphor that Sal uses in his book: If you were once and athlete and then stop working out… you still retain some of the physical qualities, muscle memory and ability that you gained. Sure, it’s not “game shape” but it’s far from starting at zero. A person who has not laced-up their ice skates in years can still get on the ice and ice skate well enough to not embarrass themselves. The same concept applies to deep learning in areas like math, science and business. The base layers of deep understanding that got me to algebra might need to be revisited but I would not be starting at zero again if I had to suddenly solve for an unknown number. A quick equation refresher and a few practice problems would bring me up to speed on a concept I had laid the groundwork for years before.
So this brings up and interesting thought. When I am exposed to things that I am not actively learning, does that lay groundwork for future learning. Lets say that few psychologist were having a very geeky chat at the local coffee shop and I was listening in on their debate about bipolar disease. Then a year later I find myself very interested in bipolar disease and I pick-up a book on it. Will I understand the topic any better from the exposure I had to the topic at the coffee shop? It’s like second-hand smoke but in this case second-hand knowledge.
I think that we are much more impressionable than we know and even exposure to things as simple as colors at the shoe store or smells at a gym play into the everyday decisions that we make and what we ultimately know.
The best grocery shopping list manager ever
Shorthand: Use Wunderlist.com (free) productivity app to manage you grocery shopping, meal planning and food notes.
Okay so lets say your new to the Paleo diet and you are a bit confused about what you can or can't eat. Don't be embarrassed, it's common and easily remedied. First things first, take advantage of the information like this shopping list from Robbwolf.com to get started. Robb did all of the handwork of telling you what to buy but maintaining this list is still a bit cumbersome. Enter Wunderlist.com (no affiliation). This simple productivity tools makes a surprisingly awesome grocery shopping list manager.
Start by getting an account at Wunderlist.com (free) and then download the mobile app (free) Wunderlist is built with the end-user in mind and the tutorial is all you'll need to get the hang of this app. Wunderlist for iOS and Wunderlist for Android
Create a new list in Wunderlist (I called mine RB Paleo shopping list)
Start adding items to the list: Avocado, turmeric, jerky… etc.
Simply check the items you already have in stock and leave the items you need to pick-up unchecked.
Once you've got the list together and your current inventory cataloged, you're set. The next time you run out of Grass-fed/Grass-finished beef just open the app and uncheck the item. I don't think that most people will need to take the shopping list any further than this but if you suffer from techno-lust like I do and you have to split the shopping duties with family members, you're covered!
Share your Paleo shopping list in two* clicks (or finger jabs at the mobile phone)
Select the + icon on the list name
Select who you want to share with *you might have to invite your your co-shoppers to wanderlust to share with them and this could include further clicks and finger jabs.
Tip: If you don't care for up-to-the-minute updates on which items your co-shoppers just picked-up at Costco adjust your notifications accordingly in the settings and preferences options of Wunderlist.
Not enough bells and whistles yet? Okay… Each task comes complete with a flagging/starring option that will float whatever you star right to the top. I use this to reinforce the items I must have on the list. You'd think that everything on the list would be considered "needed" but it turns out that teenagers aren't familiar with this system. So float the really important stuff to the top by flagging the items.
Ready to geek-out over some details? If having an awesome grocery list app, sharing with your family and making your lists teenager-proof isn't enough of for you, fret-not. There's one more little gem in this app/website.
Double clicking or finger flicking any item will open a set of options for each item on your list that includes notes, reminders, due dates and a subtask feature that aren't really necessary for basic grocery management but could be useful if you are planning a meal in advance and need to get a few special ingredients before your gluten-free friends show-up a few weeks from now. Now I bet your thinking to yourself that this is overkill but I've been in enough nutrition forums and Paleo boards to know that food is serious business and for the power-users out there I've got one more stick up my sleeve for you. Meals!
Create another list and call it meals (or something fancy, w/e floats your boat) add a meal the same way you added your items before like "Stuffed Red Peppers" Open the item and in the sub-tasks start adding the ingredients that you'll need to make the stuffed red peppers Add any cooking details and notes about the dish rejoice in the new, free and totally awesome shopping list/recipe book/food notes tool you've discovered.

Intro to Celiac Disease = Gluten Free
First and formost, there is a difference between having Celiac Disease and having a wheat allergy. Celiac is for life! Wheat allergies can be outgrown as you become an adult. That said, here's a straight-forward information on Celiac Disease.
Many thanks as always to my research team at: Fancy Hands
1. Cause of Celiac Disease:
Celiac Disease (CD) is a lifelong inherited autoimmune condition affecting children and adults. When people with CD eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed. Even small amounts of gluten in foods can affect those with CD and cause health problems. Damage can occur to the small bowel even when there are no symptoms present.
Gluten is the common name for the proteins in specific grains that are harmful to persons with celiac disease. These proteins are found in ALL forms of wheat (including durum, semolina, spelt, kamut, einkorn and faro) and related grains rye, barley and triticale and MUST be eliminated.

2. Celiac Disease Symptoms:
CLASSIC SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE
•Abdominal cramping, intestinal gas
•Distention and bloating of the stomach
•Chronic diarrhea or constipation (or both)
•Steatorrhea – fatty stools
•Anemia – unexplained, due to folic acid, B12 or iron deficiency (or all)
•Unexplained weight loss with large appetite or weight gain

3. Treatment of Celiac Disease:
The only treatment is the lifelong adherence to the gluten-free diet. When gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine will start to heal and overall health improves. Medication is not normally required. Consult your physician regarding specific nutritional supplementation to correct any deficiencies. The diagnosed celiac should have medical follow-up to monitor the clinical response to the gluten-free diet.
Adapting to the gluten-free diet requires some lifestyle changes. It is essential to read labels which are often imprecise, and to learn how to identify ingredients that may contain hidden gluten. Even small amounts of ingested gluten can affect those with CD and cause health problems.
Dietary compliance increases the quality of life and decreases the likelihood of osteoporosis, intestinal lymphoma and other associated illnesses.
Because osteoporosis is common and may be profound in patients with newly diagnosed CD, bone density should be measured at or shortly after diagnosis.
Potential harmful ingredients include:
•unidentified starch
•binders
•fillers
•excipients
•extenders
•malt
Gluten may also be used as a binder in some pharmaceutical products. Request clarification from food and drug manufacturers when necessary.

Grains/Flours

Research indicates that pure, uncontaminated oats consumed in moderation (up to 1/2 cup dry oats daily) are tolerated by most celiacs. Gluten-free oats are currently available in the United States. Consult your physician or dietician before including oats in your diet and for regular monitoring.

Interesting side notes:
One of the toughest parts of any diet is having the discipline to follow the rules of the diet. Whit Celiac, you either do it, or you get sick. Now that is motivation.
Gluten Free diets are not just for those with Celiac Disease. Many have chosen to remove gluten from their diets for general health reason. Others are just following the "flavor of the month" diet plan and have little valid reason to go gluten free.

I've been studying various methods of relaxation and in particular I've been looking into Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PRM). While I'm still leaning a lot about PRM and discovering new ideas and methods everyday, one thing has become painfully clear. You have to love the idea of a stranger whispering in your ear to really get into the process and get your body & mind totally relaxed. -- Not really my thing.
So I decided to explore some new and different options. What if you took a more Hollywood like approach to PRM and replaced the mystical whispering with something modern and even sci-fi? Think futuristic computer guided relaxation. Think Matrix...
