The Host
2006
The Host was screened (in incomplete form) at the Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2006, before its release in South Korea in July.
Directed and co-written by Bong Joon Ho (with Ha Joon-won and Baek Chul-hyun), the film received financial backing after the success of Bong's 2nd feature (Memories of Murder), with a budget of around $11 million (cheap by US standards, but making it one of the most expensive independent films in South Korea).
The Host broke box office records in South Korea, with more than 2.6 million people seeing it over its opening weekend, and would go on to be one of the highest-grossing films ever in South Korea.
It was Bong's first film to receive international release, and would open in the US in March 2007.
