It was the middle of the night and Riseul found herself tossing and turning. She shouldn’t have asked.
“Because I couldn’t…. I still can’t.”
An unexpected ping from her phone breaks off her contemplation. She unplugged the phone from charging and checked the person who sent her a message late at night. When Jinyoung’s name appeared as the sender, Riseul had no choice but to open the message. Jinyoung wouldn’t have sent her something if it wasn’t an emergency.
Oh God, what could have Seulla gotten herself into this time? Was she dead drunk in a ditch?
“Babe, check this out. Jihoon’s finally manning up kekekekeke. That advice totally came from his own experiences lolololol along with a link of Jihoon’s recent guesting in Hello Counselor.” Another text came in from Jinyoung who apologized and explained that she wasn’t the intended recipient.
She quickly locked her phone and threw it onto the far corner of her bed before scrunching up and squeezing her eyes shut in an attempt to stop her curiosity from getting the better of her.
It doesn’t work. She threw the blanket away and fumbled on the sheets to find her phone.
Just the first ten minutes she told herself.
She almost wanted to laugh when the hosts introduced the problem of their guest. Two band members who dated and now at the brink of break-up causing trouble for their other band members.
It was an exact replica of their past.
She noticed how he slightly shifted his weight on the pillow he sat on and how his hands immediately reached for his nape when he was asked for an advice.
“Ah, this is…” prolonging the s-sound. “They care about the two of you. I think it’s a blessing, having a group whom you can rely on even if you will sometimes think that they’re annoying or overstepping their bounds. It’s a connection you can find only by being connected with what you are passionate about. And the two of you as well,” referring to the couple.
“You’re connected by something unlike any other. You’re connected by music, and as a fellow musician I know what it’s like to be connected to others through that, so why are you both running away and being afraid that meeting each other again would destroy the group dynamics? Aren’t you two musicians? Musicians are capable and should express everything. It’s hard to understand anything with silence. Besides, I believe that once you’ve found the home you could return to, you should never let them go. Both the band and each other…” he adviced and wowed the crowd causing the other hosts to tease him in return.
“Yah, Jihoon-ah! Was that even for our guests today?” they snickered and Jihoon adamantly denied what they were hinting.
Ever since Jihoon’s statement at the press-con, everyone seemed to conclude that Jihoon and Riseul had some unfinished business and somehow, the two were shipped instead by variety show hosts.
Strangely enough, it didn’t annoy her.
She closed the video and laid on her bed while staring aimlessly at the ceiling. She always thought that she was the mature one between the two of them, but after their relationship and the current happenings, it was Jihoon who learned, accepted and acted. It was her who stayed away to reflect, but nothing grew out of it, only her stubbornness.
It was embarrassing and a strike to her pride how it was Jihoon whom she needed to actually realize things that she needed to reflect on back then.
Maybe it was her mistake. No, it was her mistake.
She shouldn’t have left without a word.
Back then, they were each other’s home, and she pondered if JIhoon was still there, waiting for her to come back.
“Ah. I’m alone now..” the words slipped out of her mouth for the first time in years.
A confession. A realization.
An actualization of her regret. ---
With the concert fast approaching, the band was trying to squeeze in any possible practice that the members could attend given everyone’s busy schedules. Of course, it wasn’t possible that everyone would always be available so they settled for days where most could attend.
Today was like any other. Jisung and Riseul couldn’t attend, given their jobs. After a few rounds of practicing the songs, they were now huddled together in a big circle for some constructive critiquing which everyone knew would end up in another round of savagery, horseplaying and banters thrown to each other.
“I swear to God, I’ll tape the fuckin lyrics of the songs round your house, Jinyoung. How could you forget the lyrics when you’re the one who wrote them?” Woojin breathed down Jinyoung’s neck trying his hardest to stop himself from strangling their keyboardist.
Jaehwan joins in due to his amusement between the two’s argument, “But isn’t that Jinyoung’s trademark? And the fans love him for it. Besides he wrote that a long time ago like 3 years ago?”
“Wasn’t that five years ago, hyung? I remember that it was when Sungwoon hyung entered the band.” Guanlin, their newest member chimes in.
Jinyoung claps in response as if he suddenly remembered something, “Right! I remember that song now. It was the song Riseul helped me with when she arrived in America. Gee, so that was why I keep on forgetting the lyrics.”
“Funny story is I was having a hard time getting the concept of bitter breakups into lyrics, so I asked Riseul for help and she told me to fuck off.”
“Oh, so that was why she Skyped me at 3 in the morning back then raging about why you were the one in charge with the words. I was so sleepy back then I thought she just wanted to catch up with us.” Jaehwan added, and Woojin nudged Jinyoung who thought it was a gesture of acknowledgement.
Seongwoo was facepalming by the side as he observed how Jihoon’s eyes narrowed. Jihoon was listening - intently, and from him emanated a tension that everyone immediately felt except of course for Jinyoung and Jaehwan, their two members who could never read the atmosphere. Even Guanlin, the most clueless one regarding the past sat straight up with the tension rising, whispering to Sungwoon, “What’s happening?”
It was always a slow boil with Jihoon; like that of a simmer. The anger was always within, and what was seen on the outside was just a foreboding of the explosion to come.
“So, you knew? Where Riseul went?” Jihoon finally spoke in a low, steady tone with a smile similar to that of curiosity.
“Yeah. She told us just before she left. She gave us her Skype even, and told us her new number.” Jinyoung replied innocently.
“Oh. I see.” he nodded slowly and the hair on their arms rose.
“Because I clearly remember everyone told me that she didn’t tell anyone where she went.” Jihoon stood up and left the room closing the door with a force that caused everyone to jolt. Woojin quickly stood up to run after Jihoon, hitting Jinyoung’s head before leaving.
“Did I say anything wrong?” Jinyoung looked around confused. Jaehwan then began to understand, “Shit.” “We fucked up so bad.” Seongwoo sighed.
---
“Jihoon!” Woojin called out as Jihoon stomped his way out. When he realized that Jihoon had no intention of turning around, he quickened his pace until he forcefully grabbed him to make him turn around.
Jihoon swats away his wrist, fuming, before he launches his fist and swings it towards Woojin who didn’t see it coming from the side until he felt the force on his cheeks.
“Everyone knew.” He huffed out. “God! I feel like an idiot. Of course, everyone knew.” he shouted and laughed with bitterness. He clenched his fist again, raising it as he pulled the collar of Woojin’s shirt
“Park Jihoon!” a voice called out from behind that made him freeze and stop from swinging and ultimately let go of Woojin’s collar. That voice has been ingrained in the back of his head like a mother’s scolding. It suddenly made him rethink and reconsider his actions. “What the hell happened here? Why are you at each other’s throats?” Jisung asked with an air of authority. Jihoon walked towards Jisung before pausing, “Ask them. They’ll know. They always knew.”
Turning around and looking down on Woojin who held his swollen cheek, “I honestly don’t care if the band knew and decided to keep it from me.”
He shakes his head. “But I trusted you.”
