Nightmares and Daydreams (2/2)
All at once, those present were assaulted with...imagery, I suppose, flashes of nightmarish scenery that differed person to person.
What I saw was...indescribable, but I will try, for the sake of taking some of the power from those images.
There was darkness, a deafening pressure and silence as I found myself viewing something beneath the furthest reaches of the sea. Beyond the depth that any light could penetrate, I felt something squirming within the dark. Something with hundreds upon thousands of tendril-like arms and covered in eyes unseeing. Something which chewed on the gory remnants of Raen and Kojin. Something which had carved great furrows into the sea bed, exposing a fleshy, muscle-fiber interior, as if the sea floor itself were alive and bleeding. Something that, if it had the ability to speak, I direly fear would use my own voice.
We burned the cabin. Burned it and cut it and destroyed everything, and not a single one of us had any idea what we had witnessed, or why. I think, after seeing that imagery burning through our brains, none of us even cared. We just wanted to forget.
I just wanted to forget.
It was easy to regain my composure, but only because I am no stranger to such dreams. Things devouring my family, things wearing my skin, stealing away all that I am. It’s easy to pretend you’re okay when someone else is in need. But late at night, when the chronometer strikes three bells and the Hour of the Wolf arrives, and I wake from the nightmares screaming, there is no more pretending.
I cannot lie to myself in those moments, tell myself everything will be alright. Because even though the creature that once shared my body is gone, I still feel its hold. I still hear its mocking voice, its presence like ice in my veins. In those small, quiet, scary hours of the morning, I cannot help allowing the fear to consume me. Because there is always that small, nagging voice within me, wondering if I am really free.
What if it never left? What if there are still traces? What if it will reawaken, and my waking nightmares will become the truth in the harsh light of day?
If it is not gone from me now, will it ever be? I still feel that shadow of the nightmare hanging over me.
I wonder if I always will.
Nightmares and Daydreams (1 /2)
It began, as always, with a request. A request posed to Casilmont by House Haillenarte, a plea to investigate strange happenings in a tribe of Vanu.
The journey on the Marvelous Dragonfly was mercifully short, though perhaps it was merely that my mind was occupied by ideas of what we could be needed for. Dealings with beast tribes are not exactly commonplace, and it is even more rare for a tribe to seek aid from Eorzea’s other spoken races.
But when we arrived, we understood.
They had found a stranger, a Vanu warrior whom no one was familiar with, along with two brothers who had grown silent. With the permission of the chief, we were granted leave to question the trio. At first, they refused to even acknowledge our presence. Only by challenging them did we get any reply at all, though it was far from favorable. One of the brothers seemed to be unusually aggressive, taken by a rage, and attacked Nachtiryn. The man nearly took a blow to the head before we stepped in. During the commotion, the Vanu Stranger sprinted off, leading myself and fellow agents to give chase which ended at the edge of a cliff.
This…this was the true beginning of the horror. The Vanu Stranger revealed that he was no Vanu at all. Rather, he was an Ixali interloper. He had…slain one of the Vanu, hollowed out enough of a space within the poor creature's body to serve as a disguise, and wore him as a second skin. In shock and disgust, my fellow agents dispatched the Ixal. Before he tumbled into the Sea of Clouds, he bade us return to a cabin in Greentear. I guess the place must have some significance to my fellow agents, but I was confused. Nevertheless, I followed, both out of a promise made to the Vanu chief and my own insatiable curiosity.
It was a horrible mistake.
We found nothing within the cabin. No, that isn’t right, we found something, alright. Or rather, something found us. Within that cabin in Greentear, we saw only the remnants of a body. He was a desiccated husk, once a slave tortured at the hands of a cult following the decree of some “divine” tome in their possession. We took it from them back then. Well, my fellow agents did. This all occurred prior to my joining. I know not what the particular tome did, but I have seen what the Amber Codex is capable of. No good comes from the use of any of them. And yet, we have three within our safekeeping…
But I digress.
A corpse, a dark cabin, and the roar of a storm outside, we prepared to leave empty-handed.
Nothing could prepare us for what we experienced next.
(I used a screenshot of the cabin in Dimwold, rather than the one in Greentear simply due to its appearance. Mentions @a-nacht-at-sea)
