Habitually Chic
I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that this past Sunday, October 30th marked the 10 year anniversary of the publication of my book Habitually Chic: Creativity at Work. I can never forget the date because it was the same day that Hurricane Sandy was scheduled to hit NYC. I’ll be forever grateful to the people who came out to a signing at Archivia Books (RIP) a few days before for a book signing including @slimpaley. I’m also thankful to the people featured in the book who let me photograph their workspaces and interview them. I was in the first wave of bloggers who published books and I set out to make a book that I would be excited to find on a table in a bookstore. In the end, I think I succeed with the help of my editor @wesdelval. And yes, I have been thinking of new book ideas. I had one that I was toying with before the pandemic but I think I have finally committed to the perfect subject. Now I just need to get through my audit for 2019 that is ruining my life and find the perfect literary agent. #creativityatwork #book #habituallychic (at Upper East Side) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkbVTHfOs_x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
If you’re looking for color inspiration, I highly recommend visiting Newport. The paint colors of the 18th century houses are some of the best I’ve ever seen and this one is perfect for October. 🎃 #newport #rhodeisland #theclasiccoast #alwaysauberge #habituallychic #orange (at Newport, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGh0EKrnNob/?igshid=1ral08h8yc5d5
Thanks to @inagarten, I find myself with a couple thousand new followers today so I thought it might be nice to introduce myself. As a photographer and writer, I much prefer to stay behind the scenes so I’ll never be someone who posts selfies and pictures of myself but it’s nice to check in occasionally. The shortish version is that I have a degree in art history but didn’t know what I wanted to do with it so I landed in commercial real estate. I transferred with my company to NYC in August 2001 and hoped I could move into fashion. The events of 9/11 meant I was an automatic New Yorker that day but couldn’t change paths until 2005 when I had enough of the male dominated industry and took a pay cut to work for an interior designer. In 2007, I was reading blogs based outside of NYC talking about things in my backyard and decided to start my own. I wanted the name to match my initials which is how Habitually Chic was born. After a layoff in 2008, I went out on my own and haven’t worked for anyone since. I decided to take a break from my interior design practice in 2012 when I published my book Habitually Chic: Creativity at Work where I photographed and interviewed 30 creatives in their workspaces. Since then, I’ve worked with brands, retailers, hotels, and more on collaborations and partnerships as a full time blogger and influencer. I love the freedom it affords me except when I’m quarantined in NYC. I was starting to think about starting my second book when all of this happened which I can’t do without traveling so now I’m outlining an idea for a tv series idea. This down time has been interesting but I’m ready for a change a scenery soon. I welcome you all and appreciate the kind words about my peaceful photos. I will always strive to be a respite from this crazy world and introduce you to chic things and beautiful places.
