Hachikazu was running through the darkening forest. Low branches whipped and cut at his face as he ran, but none of them cut so deep as the sound of frightened squeaking coming from somewhere in the distance. He began to sense the presence of a dark aura as he got closer. It felt familiar, almost like-
"You're a miserable creature."
His head whipped around.
Sanemi.
The Wind Pillar had backed Milo up against a tree, his sword drawn.
There was a bleeding cut on Milo's cheek. Hachi's fists clenched.
"You've always been a worthless, miserable creature, and it's high time you were put out of that misery."
He slashed at her neck.
Hachi sprang out of the bushes and dived into Milo, pushing her out of the way. Sanemi missed and cut the tree in half instead. Hachi stood up, shielding Milo and reaching over his shoulder to grab his own sword.
"You," Sanemi snarled. He pulled his sword out of the stump easily and advanced on them until he was just a few feet away. "Of course you would interfere. You're always hanging around her like her guard dog or something. I'd say it was cute if it wasn't so annoying."
Hachi gripped his handle tightly.
"Honestly, I don't know what you see in her. She's a useless burden at best and a danger at worst. Has it not occurred once in your barren mind that she could turn and eat you at any moment?" He glared at her.
Hachi was struggling to keep his human appearance at this point, he was so angry. "I won't let you kill her." He assumed a threatening stance and drew his sword. "As long as I'm alive, that'll never happen."
Sanemi barked a harsh laugh. "So I'll have to kill you first, is that right? Seems a bit wasteful, but if you're going to betray the Corps by protecting this demon..." He poised his sword back into striking position. "I'll be glad to rid us of a traitor."
Milo stifled a frightened cry.
Sanemi pointed his sword at Milo. "And you, you sniveling, clinging animal. You remind me too much of the pathetic creature that was my brother. It's disgusting." He grinned maliciously. "Maybe I'll kill you first after all in front of your boyfriend here. You're really getting on my nerves."
Slash.
Hachi flashed past him, cutting into Sanemi's shoulder.
The realization hit him like a train.
I've made a terrible mistake.
In his rage, he'd forgotten about the marechi. He'd successfully doomed both himself and Milo.
He tripped as he landed and curled up on the ground. Hunger clouded his vision and drool pooled around his fangs. His claws sank into the ground and rabid thoughts raced through his mind.
Then he thought about Milo.
I have to fight this.
He staggered up onto his feet, not bothering to disguise his eyes anymore.
For her.
Sanemi was slowly approaching Milo, tracing his katana along the ground. Fury lit once more within him. Not only was he trying to kill Milo, he was dragging it out to terrify and toy with her.
There was no way he was beating the Wind Pillar in a fight, so his best bet was to grab Milo and run.
"Are you tormenting squirrels out here again, Shinazugawa?"
"Tomioka," Sanemi growled.
A perfect distraction. While Sanemi's head was turned, Hachi launched forward and scooped her up. He jumped up into the tall trees and leapt from branch to branch deeper into the woods.

Hachikazu slipped into the broken window of his... "house". He'd run back to the mansion to steal some bandages just in case Milo was too scared to heal herself. They would have to keep a low profile for a little bit. Sanemi would probably try to kill her again if he saw her.
"Milo?"
"I-I'm in here."
Her small voice sounded from his left. She was curled up into a tiny ball in the corner of the room. She was shaking slightly.
Hachi dropped the bandages and ran to her. He hugged her tightly. "I hope you know that none of what he said is true. You're wonderful and amazing and beautiful and if he ever says that again I'm going to eat him."
Tears were running down his own face now. He really thought they were going to die.
"You can stay here for as long as you want. You're not a burden... You're never a burden."
He felt Milo put her tiny arms around him. He could hear her crying into his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry... I should have been able to get away by myself..."
Hachi kissed the top of her head. "Never be sorry, angel." He wiped the tears off her cheek.
"You're the exact opposite of useless. You're a treasure."
hope it's okay
