I finally pinpointed what might bother me the most about Beverly's death - in a show about how Hannibal is manipulating everyone around him and how Will grows to throw that manipulation back, every other character is set up to fail. Jack, Alana, they might be sufficiently main characters to survive; we'll see. I'm still scared for Alana (even though Alan Bloom is canonically a very side presence and survives), and we still need to see the denouement of that season opening fight, but I don't see them fucking with canon so much that Jack Crawford dies.

But Beverly. What rankles about Beverly's death is that it shows her as a failure. Other people have posted about the whats and whys of how ridiculous it is for such a seasoned and expert FBI analyst to go search Hannibal's house alone and without backup like she did, etc. I just saw a gifset of the "At least Will's not saying you did it anymore" "At least not to me" scene, and ugh. WE know Hannibal's playing with her, and Will expressly says so - the main, male characters and their mindgames and their intelligence are so prioritized in this show that even an EXPRESS WARNING to a similarly intelligent character aren't enough, because of necessity she must be so much less smart than Hannibal that her breakthrough of evidence is totally sidestepped by him already having anticipated her and ready to kill her.  It's a silly death and failure for a woman who is exceedingly competent, and it's total bullshit to claim these first five episodes have been about her character growth. We knew all this stuff (her competence, in the lab and the field; her wit; her caring; her kickass faces) about Bev from the first season, and it made us care about her as a character, and giving her more screentime (with little actual growth or change in character!!) just to throw her characterization away in a clear bid to increase Will's emotional torment is such the epitome of fridging that it is ridiculous.
