I read your post about murder/sex in homestuck and the subsequent post about quest beds and it left me with this weird feeling about how weird it is that the way to reach godhood in a game based on reproduction was dying on a bed instead of... um well other means involving that item and I was wondering if you've ever questioned that line of thought?
Not until like. A day ago? Two days ago? I think it’s really easy to take things for granted in a story and not ask “why” when unprompted.
Plus Hussie really likes providing multiple explanations for the same phenomena to discourage further thought. Like, Tavros saying that trolls deliberately target kids at moments of emotional vulnerability, so if anyone DID question the timing, they might just say “oh okay, that’s why.”
In that same vein, there’s two alternate rationales for why people ascend on Quest Bed: one is that since the bed is made of stone, it plays into the idea of sacrificial altar, suggesting that dead kids are being offered up to some god. It also plays into the idea that kids are literally becoming their dreamself, since they go to sleep on the bed. Ascending to the godtier is supposed to bring you closer to your ultimate/ideal self, the sort of person you dream of being. So going to sleep to ascend made sense on that level.
Had Hussie NOT provided these alternate rationales, maybe more people would have connected beds to reproduction? It’s hard to say.
