Muslims eat Halal food, food that is permissible by the Islamic Law, outlined in Quranic and Prophetic sources. Halal food is food that, among a few other guidelines, does not contain porcine and alcoholic ingredients. Meat and poultry should be prepared in the Islamic way: name of Allah must be mentioned when slaughtering, and the animal’s suffering is minimized in the process.

Islamic slaughter methods are beneficial to human health. The blood completely drains from the carcass, producing healthier and cleaner meat that is free from excessive microbial growth. In addition, the meat lacks fear toxins, which cause fear and anxiety in humans, as the slaughter is swift, quick, all-encompassing, and as painless as possible.
The halal method of preparing animals is not only the most hygienic; it is also the most humane for the animal. Sharp knife is used, no beating or stunning of animal is allowed, and ideally, an animal should not be witnessing ‘his friend’s’ slaughter.
The halal process produces cleaner, more tender, and tastier meat.

The term surfaced in 2013 in France elections for European Parliament, as anti-foreigner sentiments grew in France. The conservative right wing National Front party mayor of southern city Beziers, Mr. Robert Menard, voiced his concern of ubiquitous Muslim halal eateries in France:
“French people are attached to their history, their culture. When the presence of foreigners is too visible, people feel threatened. Too many kebab shops are a threat to the historical image and identity of the city.” There is also unfounded fear that more kebab shops mean attracting more ‘bearded and veiled’ people and that the shops are fronts for illegal activities such as money laundering and terrorism funding.
However, Mr. Philippe Faure, French Foreign Ministry Official in charge of French tourism and cuisine promotion was quoted to say on Kebabaphobia: “It is the manipulation of food for political ends. It is racism, pure and simple.”
300 million kebabs are eaten a year in 10,000 outlets across France. It is third to hamburgers and pizza in French’s fast food diet.
