For those who doesn't know what Hal-con is, it's a convention for sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, and anime community. This was my first time attending to a convention so it was really a great experience.
I'm just going to talk just a brief summary through bullet listing because I don't want to ramble on too much. Mind you I didn't get too many photos. Summary are under the 'Read More' link. I'll upload the photos later on.
Hal-con 2013 Nov. 8th
Me and Tracy met up with the others (James, Megan, and Andrew) before heading to the building where the convention was taken place. I think we got there by 10:30 am.
Megan was cosplaying as Chi from Chobits, Anderw as Hamphine Hambart from Sunday Without God, Tracy as Lucy from ServicexServant, Me as fem!Hibiki? (kind of *coughs* I can't imitate his curls) from DeSu 2.
We didn't stay too long though. Maybe for 2 1/2 hours? We only explored the panels and the floors. So far I only bought 3 pins from the Dangan Ronpa series. I didn't want to spend too much money.
We left around 3 pm.
Hal-con 2013 Nov. 9th
Out with the usual group with Packer joined in later on. This time we decided to meet directly at the building directing instead meeting on campus. We got there around the same time.
This time I dressed up as Team Aqua grunt, Megan as Team Magma grunt, Andrew as Doctor Who, and Packer as the MC (Keima Katsuragi I think?) from The World God Only Knows.
Today there was certainly a lot of people, mainly because there was a cosplay contest as well signatures/photographs from special guests.
Since Tracy was waiting in line to get Terry Brooks' autograph, we had to the food court in ScotiaSquare for lunch. After 30 mins or so, we came back and apparently the building was over its capacity limit so they didn't let anyone in, even if they had the bracelets. Called Tracy about the situation and waited for two hours.
The Hal-con staff were certainly trying the best to resolve the issue and even offered some drinks and freebie (a Nyan-cat sticker) as an apology. Gotta give credit for that.
Not wanting to stay long (since we have plans later on), we left around 3:30 pm.
Hal-con 2013 Nov. 10th
Final day of Halcon! And I dressed as Aqua team grunt again. I was planning with Korra but I didn't have those hair accessories and I still need to fix those armbands so I didn't.
This time we got there early. Like around 9:30 am and spent most of the time upstairs in the gaming floor, playing Persona 4 Arena and Marvel vs Capcom game.
Around noon-time, there was a Vic Mignona Q&A so me and Tracy went there. Got the whole thing recorded and he had a autograph/photograph session at 2:45 pm-4:45 pm. I got both his autograph and his DVD where it features him singing the songs froms FMA, DNAngel, Ouaran host club, DBZ and as well a original short film, Fullmetal Fantays, which is like a fanmade live action. Basically a mixture of awesomesauce. I'll watch it later on.
And finally I bought 2 prints. Both are Persona 4 related. :P
We left quite "late" this time. It was around 5 pm. There was a Pokemon photoshoot in the ScotiaSquare mall but I didn't like the look of the weather so I had to leave (basically I was the only Team Aqua member in the whole convention lol. There were Team magma and Team Rocket as well Pokemon trainers but that's it).
The final day of HalCon was much quieter than the first two, as it should have been. There were far fewer people, the big events were over, and most everyone had already bought all the souvenirs they wanted. So what did we do?
Well, we kicked off the day with a pretty terrible staging of the House on Haunted Hill by the B-Side Players. To be fair to the actors, they were up against some fairly steep obstacles to making their show work. They were competing with the natural Con noises filtering through fabric thin wall dividers, a crowd exhausted by two days of hard Conning, an early morning performance time (the absolute worst time to stage a play), a missing cast member (due to illness, we were told), the constant comings and goings of security guards, workers, and fans, a stage not built for their play, and a never changing flood of lights with absolutely no lighting cues. The fact that they held my twins' attention for the whole hour and forty minutes (without intermission) is a victory, and we did have fun, but it was a rough sort of fun. Milos laughed out loud at the end, and I am pretty sure that was not the reaction they were looking for. Poor players. I would like to see them under better circumstances.
The rest of the day was much, much better. Bronte had her picture take with Jewel Staite:
Cool hey? Milos spent some time with artist (and Image Comics letterer) Kelly Tindall. And I had a quick chat with Robert J. Sawyer. Then we all wandered around, took pictures of cool CosPlayers, watched an acrobatics troupe, then waved our goodbyes to the Con. It was a quiet end to a bustling weekend, and I am pretty sure we've officially doomed our children to years of CosPlay and ConAttendance.
I am thinking I need to stage something at next year's HalCon myself.
In my own little world this was the most social con I've ever been to. I messed around with friends, hosted some great (PACKED) panels, and did several private shoots that i'll be posting later. Walking around and taking photos wasn't really a part of my weekend at all. The convention's lighting hell kept me from wasting much time on hallway photos and i'm not disappointed in the slightest, these pictures I have were just good fun. I met some great people this weekend, some of which I know for sure i'll be shooting again.
None of us (other then Bella) could make it to Hal con this year, which totally sucks! But we hope everyone that went had an amazing time and hopefully we'll make it next year c:
//so i think my Rin Tezuka cosplay was loved faaaar more than my Krista cosplay and Aladdin cosplays put together over the weekend of halcon~ very interesting. I must wear it more ofter.
