Hi there! And thanks for waiting on a reply to this.

Unfortunately, my first attempt at querying failed. I sent out 100+ queries and received several full-manuscript requests, but in the end, all of the interested agents passed on representing my book.

I'm sad about that, of course. My heart is still sore even a few years after the last rejection email came in. But I've learned a lot about the querying process just by going through it, and the next time I try, I'll be much better equipped to handle it. (And I do very much intend to try again! I'm still determined to land an agent and publish my books.)

Querying is long, difficult, and can be quite stressful. My biggest advice: if possible, don't go it alone! Having a strong support network of loving friends and fellow writers will help you more than I have words to describe.

Happy STS! Do any of your stories take place on or near the sea? Alternatively, are there any unusual settings you’ve drawn inspiration from? What is life like for your characters in these parts?

Antium, the setting of Project Vestige is a coastal town! There’s a beautiful beach about a 10 minute drive from the university where my main characters live.

I’m pretty sure life is basically perfect for my characters who live in Antium... They live in such an aesthetically pleasing place, with a beautiful beach nearby, a nice forest... Sigh, I’m so jealous. 

Life isn’t perfect for them though because they’re ungrateful bastards they have bigger things to worry about.

Happy STS! Do you have a romance in one of your wips? Either tell me about that or about another character relationship you’ve enjoyed writing (if you’d like)

I’m sorry I’m answering this so late, but thank you so much for the sts ask!!

I have... lots of romance in my WIPs LOL I’m such a sucker for love!!

In my western Sisterhood of Blood, my main character Rosalind ends up in a relationship with her former girlfriend, Eliza, once again. They have a complicated relationship at the beginning of the story given how Rosalind just up and abandoned her when they were teenagers and now Eliza is a widow with a child.

Sisterhood of Blood also features a relationship between a trans man named Charlie and his girlfriend Ruth who is a former prostitute. Their relationship is sugary sweet and I absolutely love writing for the two of them!

In my newest WIP Feast of Bones it kind of has a romance in it. Juliet is my main character and she’s murdered her abusive husband and is stuck on a homestead in the middle of nowhere. There’s a creature lurking in the woods that starts to take care of her. Women can be feral and have a lil monster smooch.... as a treat

💓 which OC did you have to completely start over with this year?

probably scott. his character has changed a lot from what i first imagined him a few months ago. scott’s character comes from a couple of different inspos:

- a character from the same dream that inspired joe’s creation. i think his name might have been collin? he and joe were best friends and they lived on the same street or something to that effect.

- i was at my grandparents’ house when i was a kid, and i saw maybe a bit of a movie or a tv show or something where a kid was sent to live with his grandparents. his mom had depression or something, or she was grieving over someone or something? she was looking at pictures, cutting some of them up (maybe bc her husband left?). it looked like it was maybe winter or some place cold bc it seemed kind of cold and they lived on some kind of open land, but there weren’t like any plants except these dried up looking fields of grass. they also lived in a cabin or a farm or something.

changes:

- scott has siblings. his mom married alec, bella, and carter’s moms, so he’s their stepbrother.

- originally scott was in some other profession but i don’t remember what it was. after a bit i decided he becomes a cop to investigate his parents’ killer, becomes disgusted with the whole thing, then resigns later and goes on to become something else. i’m still not clear on what that is yet, but hopefully will become clear later lol.

- his relationship with his grandparents. originally his relationship with them was kind of okay, but then i made them involved with the ranch, so now they’re really bad people. one of the grandparents is like a retired psychologist/biologist (he deals in brainwashing, memory rewriting/erasing/implanting, he’s involved with the experiments, etc), the other is a retired teacher (she teaches the assassins the subjects the ranch wants them to know to carry out operations, and handpicks the people that teach them in her absence).

what they do to scott is massively fucked up. they send him to the ranch every summer where he’s subjected to awful shit, then they overwrite those memories to try to make him think he was at summer camp. so whenever scott brings up “summer camp” it’s really the ranch he’s talking about.

- scott’s friendship with sage. i didn’t plan on them having a weird, conflict-of-interest friends with benefits relationship, it just kind of happened lol. all ‘im a cop and you’re a criminal and i don’t care about any of this shit, but they still want me to go after you to make themselves look good’ and ‘we’re not that different, you and me’ that kind of thing. sex and loneliness abound. 

💌 which OC did you write about most this year?

i’m not really sure bc i switch off. like some days i’ll be really focused on a certain character to the point where i’ll just write a bunch of stuff about them, then i’ll fixate on a different character another day. it goes on and on. which is part of why there are so many povs in defect/ph lol.

1. usually if you see a character in one of my books and they’re an OBVIOUS villain. like could have evil tattooed on their forehead and you’d be like alright accurate. they’re not the Big Bad

2. that’s definitely not true in my fantasy novels at all, I just realized. evil queens and corrupt deities abound

carnegie: what authors and/or books/stories have inspired you to write or influenced your work?

this is an excuse to plug my favorite series, but i don’t care.

CHRISTOPHER PAOLINI. if you don’t know him, look him up. he wrote the series that kickstarted my love of writing, and if you haven’t yet read The Inheritance Cycle, you are doing yourself a disservice. He wrote the first book (in a series of four) when he was fifteen, and to this day it holds up as one of my favorite books of all time. go read it, and then come yell at me about it.

aside from that, though, there’s the classic Lord of the Rings, The Legend of Drizzt (it’s long but worth it), probably Warrior Cats if I had to guess.I read way too many of those books not to be influenced in some way. 

for poetry, i’m a big fan of Robert Frost, Shel Silverstein, Margaret Atwood, and Shakespeare (i’m talking about his sonnets, but i love his theatre as well)

more recently, I’ve been influenced by the Welcome to Night Vale podcast and novels, both of which are fantastic inspiration for surreal horror.

when/if i ever get my poetry collections done, i’ve already written the dedication pages.
