Meet Nick Jones, a marketing major from Dexter, Michigan. We asked Nick a few questions about his NMU experience so far:
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
Nick: I came to NMU because a co-worker of mine who had graduated in '83 told me I should check it out. I loved it and that next fall I was starting school 8 hours away from home.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
Nick: Not necessarily a part of my major, but every year I tell people that I know who aren't sure of what they want to study to go to the College of Business Fall Social, and I have had about five or six people tell me that they have a better idea of what they want to study after they have gone and checked it out!
What are you involved with on campus?
Nick: I am not sure what I plan to be doing around campus now, other than Campus Visit Program. But, I used to be really involved in Housing and Residence Life when I lived on campus. I was President of Van Antwerp Hall, and also President of my house. I did a lot of housing-related activities during my first two years at Northern.
Outside of school, what do you enjoy?
Nick: Outside of school, I love to hike, walk along Lakeshore Blvd, hang out with my friends, and explore Marquette and its surrounding areas! This winter I want to try to actually learn to ice skate!
Of your activities on- or off-campus (residence life, student organizations, internships, etc.), what has been the most rewarding and why?
Nick: The most rewarding thing I have done would have to be when I was president of Van Antwerp Hall. I learned a lot about myself, and I got to meet so many awesome people. I also bettered my leadership skills. Because of that opportunity, I have made lifetime friends and I will never forget any part of it!
What does “be Northern” mean to you?
Nick: ‘Be Northern’ (to me) is the idea that you can have an adventure both in and out of the classroom. Like how you can hike a mountain and then go to class 15 minutes later. Or travel 8 hours away from home and still be there.
What are your hopes or plans after graduation?
Nick: I don't quite know what I want to do after NMU. I have thought about furthering my education. Or maybe I'll look for work. I like to talk to people so maybe I will do that!
Further comments about your NMU experience?
Nick: My last comment about NMU is: If you are thinking about going here, do it! If you go to any college, you will get the college experience. BUT, if you go to Northern, you are going to get an adventure that you will never forget!
Why do you wear a mask?
Nick: I wear a mask for my friends, family, and everyone I see on a daily basis. Strangers, co-workers, and the people I see around campus.
How have you been practicing social distancing?
Nick: I do practice social distancing, I am only in close contact with people I have been around for a long time (roommate, family).
How has COVID-19 changed your perspective or your lifestyle?
Nick: COVID-19 has changed some of my perspectives and lifestyle. I take more notice of what I touch and who I am around. And I have been more mindful not only towards myself and other but also about what I eat and do.
