Rethinking “independence”. [Originally posted on July 4 on Instagram)

With the lockdown being relaxed this weekend (I mean, pubs are open) in the UK and today being the 4th of July in the US, I really am struggling with the concept of independence. While things are open and I can see people outside, I choose to stay at home still. For my friends who are at high-risk, for my friends and family in the healthcare system, and really because I don’t feel comfortable (as a scientist) with the government’s decision. I live in a very crowded area, and gosh I do want to go out, but I won’t unless I really have to. I remember at the beginning of the lockdown listening to one of my favourite podcasts @earhustlesq and hearing Earlonne the presenter said something about quarantine and lockdown giving people a taste of how it feels like to be incarcerated. To have your freedom taken away from you is tough, but what if you were actually innocent? Or if you were given a sentence you didn’t actually deserve? why we love halo crowns!

History of the Halo Crown

Firstly, we should point out that the design is nothing new, the halo crown design was popularised by Anne Boleyn & Mary I, in Tudor times, other wise known as the French Hood. 

The shape once again made a resurgence in the late 19th century and was often called the 'aureole-brimmed" hat throughout the 1930s.  

In the 1940's the design took on the halo crown shape and became a popular style with brides; like that worn by Wallis Simpson in her marriage to the Duke of Windsor, created by Parisian milliner Caroline Reboux.

Almost all our collections feature this design, from floral to feathered!  So why do we love the halo?

The halo does many things; firstly the halo frames the face.  The height of the hat helps to draw the gaze of the eye upwards; this helps give the illusion of height and elegance.

More than that however is the variety of styles we can create with just a singular shape base.  The crown can be made in almost any fabric, with or without adornment and so easy to wear.  It can also look and feel high fashion, or soft and ethereal for brides to be.  

The halo is also a great choice for anyone who is either hat shy or doesn't want to mess up their hair with a heavy hat.  The halo crown, in most cases, is light to wear, with minimum disruption to the hair and will add the finishing touch to your outfit.

Vintage Halo Hat by Archie Eason - 1950s or 1960s Halo Hat with Hand Sewn Trim

This is a vintage halo hat by Archie Eason who was active in millinery beginning in the late 1950s.   The hat is purple felt with hand sewn rhinestone like decorations. This is a really fabulous hat that I bought years ago and have always admired. The hat is in good condition with a slight worn spot that you can see in the final photo. It is not a hole and doesn't go through to the inside. The hat is displayed on a 21 1/2" head (wooden head) and a 21 1/4" head (blond mannequin). An interesting note, Archie Eason used a trademark green sequin at the back of his hats which you can see in the photo.
