1937 silk and wool dress with cape by American designer, Elizabeth Hawes. "The dramatic ensemble, entitled "Alimony" and "Misadventure" is an example of Elizabeth Hawes' affinity for showcasing interesting and beautiful fabrics. The bias-cut of the skirt fabric is not only dramatic for its colorful display, but the fabric pattern is artfully matched down the center front creating a radiating rainbow that would certainly command attention when the wearer entered a room. The full, circular skirt is a hallmark of Hawes' construction and the use of non-traditional and eye-catching fabrics are as well. RecreASIAN Project 5

Today I recreated a LIFE photograph from December 1960 featuring model Marola Witt wearing supposedly a Suzy Perette dress. 

The qipao/cheongsam style has always been popular, and I know many people are worried about cultural appropriation when wearing them or wearing similar styles. In the past few weeks, I’ve had great discussion with people regarding this and we keep coming back to “intention” and “execution”, but now I want to add “historical hostility or relationship between the culture of the wearer and the culture of the item”. Some might consider this cultural appropriation, some might not. For me, as long as you wear it respectfully and not for a costume or for a sexy burlesque act (Yes I’m bringing this up again!) I don’t have a problem with it. Anyway, I am not gonna pretend I know enough of Chinese culture or the historical background of qipao to judge others. And just because I look Chinese doesn’t mean I represent what people there might think. As a TCK I have a very different experience and relationship with Western culture and the countries I’ve lived in. With this post I want you to look back on editorials featuring white women in exotic locations. Were they always respectful? Did any make you uncomfortable? Why? . Moving my creative bones as the darkness crawls away giving way to bloom. Gosh I haven’t posted here in ages! Ah well, I’ve lurked. Perhaps it’s time to treat the place like livejournal. I’ve greatly increased my vintage wardrobe, these gifs are odd and sorta fun. The pumpkin knit is a lass o Scotland 1950s set and the sweater is a hand made in Norway 1960s. It has matching mittens! My friend also found me a hat. Should be wonderful in the snow.
