In 1995, Ralph Fiennes made history when he brought Hamlet to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. While Hamlet is one of the most performed roles in theatre, no actor had ever won a Tony for it before.
His performance as the title role in Hamlet was met with an extremely positive reception from critics: here is a quote from one of them, Ben Brantley, a journalist for The New York Times:
„Mr. Fiennes is not only convincing as a brilliant, tormented man in the grip of something larger than himself, but also renders every line of the play with an emotional resonance that goes far beyond comprehension. It is a thrilling, intelligent performance.” - The New York Times, 1995 (Review titled: “A Thinking Man’s Hamlet, and a Feeling One Too”)
