Hello hi I am once again poking your inbox because I am considering playing Don't Starve Together and based on all of the posts about it that you reblog, you seem to be The Expert on it. Would you recommend playing it? I've heard good things about it but figured it would be best to consult the DST mutual
Also I've heard that there's two versions, a singleplayer and a multiplayer. Which would you say is better? (Not sure how I'd achieve multiplayer since I'm not sure who I'd play with but I am open to attempting to try if it's more fun)
Anyway yeah hopefully you're having a good day/night and thank you for any DST wisdom you may give :3
Hi Shade!!! I am HONORED that you'd come to me for Don't Starve advice, but know I myself have not done everything the game has to offer despite my 700+ hours LMAO
Don't Starve Together is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time. I mean—no shit, my blog colors and banner are inspired by the game. But even putting the lore and unique characters aside, the gameplay of it is just so addicting. When you're starting out, it's a blast just running around and figuring things out by dying over and over again. And once you know what you're doing and how to progress, there is ALWAYS something to do—whether that's gathering materials to prepare for the next season or going to go fight a boss because it's in season. It took me a long time to realize it but my ADHD brain LOVES that shit. I can just do thing after thing after thing after thing and it's SO rewarding. Plus I get distracted easily.
If you're concerned about not having people to play with (which!! I would love to play with you!!), know that 90% of my 700+ hours is from me playing alone. It's absolutely possible to have a blast playing solo! The only issue with it is that many of the game's features are intended with multiple players in mind—namely the bosses. A majority of them either have really high amounts of health, or have mechanics that make them near impossible to fight alone or without cheats (i.e. Ancient Fuelweaver, Crab King). That being said, high health isn't always a bad thing; there's a number of bosses that have high amounts of health but are just fun fights, so health feels irrelevant (i.e. Klaus, Celestial Champion). Even still a very large majority of the game can be enjoyed solo.
I think, for a new player, DST is the way to go. HOWEVER, I would highly recommend getting the original Don't Starve and its DLCs. Vanilla Don't Starve is a very unique experience and it's definitely fun to see how the series got its origins, but the Shipwrecked and Hamlet DLCs are where the original game really shines. They have unique characters, biomes, mechanics, and enemies that don't appear in DST at all. Some of those playable characters are still some of my favs! I would ABSOLUTELY get them at some point after you've played DST, even if you wait for them to go on sale. They're SUCH a blast. I should also mention there is a third DLC—Reign of Giants. It adds seasons, new biomes, new bosses, and WIgfrid and Webber to the game, essentially making it very similar to DST. Still definitely worth getting I think, but not to the same degree as the other two DLCs.
