Review 6! Sunday Without God
This week I'm covering Sunday Without God, a 12 episode anime with an interesting core concept. It came out last year, and falls somewhere in the supernatural/fantasy genre.
So this anime is based upon the concept that God created the world, and then on Sunday announced that Heaven was full, and thus abandoned the world. Humans can have one wish granted to them, but continue to exist even after death, slowly decaying. Ai Astin is a 12 year old girl who takes up her late mother's occupation of gravekeeping (making sure that humans truly die by burying them). A mysterious immortal, Hampnie Hambert, arrives at her village and causes chaos for Ai. The plot then follows her adventures as she strives to help others and save the world.
Sunday Without God was generally very good overall, I'd say. The plot had some really great twists, and dealt with the repercussions of God's actions in some very interesting ways. The theme song was an average fit for the content and anime itself, whilst the underscoring was sweet and subtle. The animation and visual effects were pretty standard in comparison to what seems to be coming out at the moment (anime wise), but were well executed.
This anime is great for a short watch if you can survive the emotional trauma! Writing and plot wise, it has a great way of building you up and then breaking you down emotionally every few episodes, which is interesting because most anime tends to do that once or twice in a season rather than over and over. In terms of the core idea, it was a clever idea that was well thought out and had a profound influence on the world and the people in it.
With all that being said, it was a lovely anime, and is worth watching if you enjoy a few anime feels or are interested in the central concept.
