Combining the toil of adventure with the power of photography and my passion for protecting a wild place was excruciatingly tough and magical. The NOBA book jury writes: "This large format book is more than a collection of beautiful photographs — although, it certainly is that — rather it is a moving, visual story of an amazing 750-mile hike from one end of the Grand Canyon to the other. Historian, author, teacher and journalist Hampton Sides returned to SLCL on Thursday evening to talk about his latest work, “On Desperate Ground: The Marines at The Reservoir, the Korean War's Greatest Battle.” He was last here in 2014.

Sides came with slides illustrating the desperate conditions the 1st Marine Division endured in the Chosin Reservoir. Many in the large audience could remember the Korean War vividly, including some veterans who had participated in the fight.
