Hamsalekha. A name that transformed the soundscape of Kannada cinema.
In an honest, wide-ranging conversation with Gaurish Akki, the legendary music director opens up about his early days, creative fire, and what still drives him after 40+ years in the industry.
Born in a humble home, Hamsalekha grew up surrounded by working-class values and artistic freedom. His father’s advice — “Become world-famous” — became a guiding mantra that pushed him through poverty, resistance, and years of relentless practice.
His music journey, deeply rooted in theatre and self-learning, took shape under the mentorship of masters in classical and Western styles. From Premaloka to dozens of unforgettable scores, his songs carried not just melody, but meaning.
But music wasn’t the destination — it was a gateway.
Now, Hamsalekha is stepping into direction with a film titled “OK”, based on female foeticide. His next big project? “Guitar”, a cinematic dream years in the making. And beyond film, he’s building the Harappa Heritage Hub — a 175-acre cultural landmark to preserve India’s ancient spirit.
Through it all, Hamsalekha remains grounded. He reads, writes, reflects. He questions fame and seeks depth. For him, legacy isn’t what you leave behind — it’s what you build for the future.
A true artist. A fearless thinker. A legend still dreaming.
