Hand Waving is my new favourite thing
"Hand-waving" is a pejorative term in science fiction; less so in fantasy. Why? If it really was possible to "explain" what was hand-waved, then why bother fiction-ing it? Are those who dislike handwaviness in SF simply seeking plausibility or consistency or both? Are those authors who soothe this need just confident in their arrangement and deployment of vocabulary?
There’s this thing I do sometimes. Call it a quirk perhaps.
If I’m talking to someone and I get something wrong in a sentence. I wave my hand in front of my face as I correct myself. Kind of like I think I’m able to wave the mistake away. Usually happens when I’ve been switching languages.
Is that a me thing or a general thing?
