Summary: Steve fights Demogorgons with the kids, and Nancy. Bailing on Y/N one too many times, causing her to break up with him. Yearning, yearning, yearning and a lot of love.
Only a week later, your mothers cat went missing. You came home from your friend and found your mom and Dustin, both hysterically pacing the living room. Or so it seemed at the first glance.
Your mom was crying, frantically running through the house.
And your brother seemed.. calm?
He wasn't pacing the house. He was walking behind her, trying to calm her. When he had gotten your mom to sit down in one of the soft cushions of your sofa, sitting down beside her, patting her shoulder supportingly, his face twisted into an apologetic frown. "It will be alright Mom, no problem." He said.
You thought he sounded like a 18 year old and not an eigth grader. He looked as if he had grown up. You hadn’t even noticed. To you, he still was six years old.
And then the phone rang, he hastily ran to where the telephone was hanging on the wall.
"Hello?" He asked, curling the cord around his finger. Now he was the one looking nervous.
"Oh mister Daniels.” Dustin turned around, shortly, giving you and your mom a thumbs up.
“Thank you, thank you!“ He was repeating over dramatically
“Yes! We will.“ He nodded
“Thank you for your help." After he had put the telephone back in its threshold, he turned around with a big smile on his face.
“Mews was seen.“ Dustin moved his hands up in surprise.
“Five streets down the road, mom.“ he exclaimed by smiling a little too much.
And your mom.. put on her shoes and went searching.
“I'll help her, we need to find her Dustin!“ You exclaimed, knowing how much your mother loved this cat. She was like a third child to her.
And then Dustin looked at you with the same calm expression he had looked at your mom with when comforting her.
“Do that!“ he picked up his Walkie.
“I'm sure we'll find her in no time.“ He commented.
“Steve, do you copy?“ he said, pressing PTT on his walkie, when you closed the door and went after your mom, trying to find this cat.
In the evening, when you and your mom returned, her cat was nowhere to be found.
It seemed odd. Someone had seen her but yet she wasn’t there. You both told yourself she would return on her own.
So the following day, you came home from shool early, you saw the red Volkswagen in front of your house.
You knew exactly whose car that was. And when you heard loud voices from the garden, you didn’t mean to overhear. You didn’t even want to have anything to do with Steve. It was only that they were talking so loudly, fighting in the sarcastic way they always did.
"So Henderson, you want to tell me, that Lizard is as big as a fox and has killed your cat?" Steve argued, seemingly not believing your brother.
“It is not a lizard,“ Dustin disagreed,
“and yes, it is growing!“
And then you stepped infront of them. Both turned around immediately, shock written on their faces.
"Dustin, I think I need an explanation!“ you said angrily.
“Y/N.“ was all Steve said. Well, he didn’t say it. He mumbled your name as if he was disappointed to see you.
“What is going on here? Where is Mews Dustin!“ you didn’t ask, you demanded. Your hands were on your hips and you tried to look angry.
But in that moment, a loud bang came from the inside of the garage. And then everything was quiet again.
“Nothing.“ Dustin exclaimed, his voice a pitch higher than intended, obviously lying. Trying to hide the noise, he added, “It's a game.“ And then he left you no time to answer and went on rambling:
“Remember my costume? It was an experiment how good those batteries would work if i used another transformative device…“ he stopped mid sentence. “That’s what this was.“
“But that doesn’t explain anything.“ you said angrily.
And then Steve looked at you, really looked at you.
“Y/N, Dustin is right, its nothing.“ he said, wanting to sound believable.
“Oh and I should believe you? You out of all people?“ you hissed at him.
Every time, when you had heard his voice or seen his car, picking up your brother or walking around in the mall, you had felt nothing but pain. Worst was at Scoops Ahoy. The only reason you went there that day, was because you were sure Steve had had a day off that day. That’s what Dustin told you at least. And then to your luck Robin had prepared the ice cream, thinking Steve really wasn’t there. Seeing Steve at Scoops Ahoy made you angry because he was the one who had hurt you and now Robin Buckley was giving free ice cream to you. Life was weird.
She probably had heard of your break up and felt pity for you. Either way, you would never go to Scoops Ahoy. Or trust Dustin when he would tell you that Steve wouldn’t be there.
Then, there was a loud squeek from the inside of the garage and both boys froze.
“What was that?“ You asked.
“Dart.” was all Dustin answered.
And Steve looked like he might wanted to kill your brother.

“Its nothing.” Steve said shortly. His voice sharp.
“Yes he is!” Dustin added, still annoyed Steve behaved as if Dart was a monster.
Steve groaned in frustration. “Dustin I swear..” but he was interrupted by him.
“Y/N, Dart is..” he paused, looking at Steve briefly before turning back to you. “a little animal I found.” He mumbled quickly.
“An animal you found?” You looked at him with a look of “Are you insane?” “What animal?” You added, now curious.
“I haven’t figured out.” He stated.
“And you kept it in the garage?”
“Yeah because I wanted Steve, right here,” he pointed at Steve dramatically “to bring him to the vet!” Dustin stumbled over a few words. It was suspicious.
“The vet?” Steve asked as if that information was new for him. Then he got what Dustin was implying and added a, “Yeah, yeah the vet!”
That alone was the worst lie they could’ve come up with.
“Okay but where is Mews?” You asked, not believing them one bit.
“I don’t know.” Dustin said and at the same time Steve chimed a “We don’t know.” Then, Dustin exhaled and quietly added,
“Mom still hasn’t found her.” You frowned. As if that had been new information. It wasn’t. And your brother was definitely covering something.
“I know that, but “Mister Vet” was talking about mom’s cat earlier.” You said, pointing at Steve.
“Yeah that’s the code for Dart.” Dustin swore.
“Because we don’t know what he is exactly!” Steve added. If it wasn’t for your mom’s missing cat, you would’ve laughed at them. They looked ridiculous, trying to cover whatever they were covering. Steve with his pretend-serious face and Dustin’s mumbling. They were bad liars. Both of them.
Another loud bang echoed behind the door, louder, than it had been before.
Steve swore under his breath, giving your little brother a death glare. But that was when you noticed their weird reactions to the sound. Neither of them moved. You on the other hand were startled by the loud noise. Instead, they froze. As if they knew what was behind that door.
“Maybe we should look after it, it might be hurt!” You said “It clearly wants to get out.” You added.
You could hear Dustin mumble a “and he wants to kill.” But Steve quickly talked over him.
“Maybe we should wait until it sleeps.” Steve suggested, not wanting you to see whatever that was. He was trying to let you reconsider, believe them.
That was enough. Knowing they were hiding something you turned and went to the garage to open the door.
“Y/N don’t!” Steve screamed. But it was too late. You had opened the door.
There it was. Immediately after opening the heavy metal door to your garage, you were met with entire darkness and a foul smell, which definitely hadn’t been there when you went inside the garage a week ago.
Holding your nose closed to prevent breathing in the air and the smell, you asked, “Why does it smell like meat in here?” looking back at the two boys, who were now following you.
It was funny. They looked as if they had seen a ghost. It made sense considering they both awaited a huge monster but to you, it just looked ridiculously crazy.
“Uhh I don’t know.” Dustin said, scratching his neck while trying to look unsuspicious. Oh he definitely knew where the smell was coming from. But that was a problem for later, you thought.
When you had stopped on the stairs to look at them, Steve went further downstairs, wanting to find Dart before you did. After all, the last thing he wanted was for you to find out.
“Shit!” he said.
“Shit.” Dustin added, having rushed down, he was now looking at was Steve was looking at. They were both standing there, hands on their hips, covering whatever they were looking at. It was a funny picture. Them both mirroring each other in their reactions.
“Dart has escaped.” Steve said, letting the torchlight flicker to the back of the garage. In the torchlight, there was a huge hole in the wall.
“Shit, shit, shit.” Dustin mumbled while scooting away, from where he was standing next to Steve, to take a closer look at the hole. That’s when you saw what they were looking at earlier. A skin like, gooey mass. Larger than a lizard. That was for sure.
“I told you this would happen man.” Steve said annoyed, grumbling loudly he added, “I knew it!”
And you stood behind both of them, wondering, what animal lost a skin this big?
While they started fighting over this missing animal, you were like air to them. They decided to search for Dart, so both of them rushed up the stairs, started the car and drove off hastily, leaving you standing in the garden without any explanations and a million questions.
You didnt believe your brother. That was the only thing you knew.
An hour later, you had went back inside your house, you tried to get some cleaning done and told yourself that “It probaly was a prank.”
