What advice can u give for people who want to try calligraphy (besides like,,,, learning how to spell it) and like what stuff to buy
im assuming you mean my handlettering/brushlettering bc that’s mostly what i post on here and im still practicing calligraphy with a dip pen myself so i wouldn’t be able to give good tips about that lmao
for beginners ((lmao i say that as if I’m not a beginner myself,, which i pretty much am)) I’d say just buy a single brush pen that you can practise with a Lot. because you definitely don’t want to spend money buying a big pack of brush pens or pen holders/nibs/ink if you find out that you don’t actually enjoy brushlettering
i’d recommend the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen as it as a nice pointed nib that retains it’s shape well so you can get the fine lines much more easily which is good when you’re a beginner!
then I’d recommend watching some beginners brush lettering videos! there are many manyy manyyyy on youtube but some of my favourite handlettering artists on youtube are SteBradbury and Will Paterson ((and im p sure both of them have done tutorials on brushlettering!))
after watching some of these and getting a feel for it, take your brush pen and a notepad and do a row or 2 of each letter of the alphabet, trying to make them as uniform as possible and concentrating on which strokes should be thin and which strokes should be thick depending on the letter! don’t worry about how your letters turn out ((my first few pages of drills were t e r r i b l e)) because it’s all progress!!
once you start to get the feel for the letters ((and how some letters like r are completely different)) then try linking them together in words!! just pick up a dictionary and write out any word!! all of the words!! your favourite song lyrics!! dan’s diss track!! just keep writing and writing and writing and you’ll improve! and when you get even more confident you can start experimenting to find ur style which is where the fun beginsss
