As soon as Pate sensed the danger, he instinctively turned to run and leave Creighton to deal with the fallout. It shouldn’t matter to him if a simple-minded person like him too the blow, after all; surely by this time tomorrow, they’ll have hanged him or thrown him in a cage and it would all be done and over with. Partners weren’t worth clinging to, especially when they’ve outlived their usefulness.
The treasure hunter stopped as this thought crossed his mind, freezing in place a few moments that felt like an eternity. Pate had a few partners in his time, he admitted, and he would be damned if he would say that Creighton—while brusque and abrasive—was the most loyal one he’d had.
With a groan and a slump of his shoulders, Pate growled and looked around, grabbing the first weapon he saw—a spear—and turned back to the fray.
"Blast me…" he muttered under his breath, narrowing his eyes and watching as Creighton was already being pulled back into a fortress, guards already moving to close the gates behind him. Pate pulled back and slung his weapon through the air, landing it straight in one of their heads. Shock and surprise filled through the men, Creighton included, and he took advantage.
He looked up and saw as the gate was starting to come down, charging only to grab Creighton’s wrist and pull him from their grasps, turning and running away with him.
"Come on!" he cried, the dumbfounded axe-wielder stumbling before gaining momentum as the gate crashed closed behind them.
