To remove a blade from a full covered sheath like this, you need to tilt it slightly as you remove it. With the spike you wouldn’t be able to do that if the welt was sewn on the bottom, so instead the welt is sewn on the top and a latch fitting will be added to hold the spike in place. Along with handmade brass clips on the haft, it will hold the axe secure and allow to remove it with ease, without having to pull the haft all the way through a loop.
