In addition to the other various rewards gained by completing story missions, every big chapter of Mafia III ends with a meeting between the player character and their mafioso underbosses. Each time the player opens up a new section of the city, they are able to assign it to one of their three underbosses, gaining specific perks and loyalty boosts depending on their choice. What makes this supremely interesting in terms of narrative design, however, is that failure on the part of the player to balance who gets how much in terms of area can lead to unique story content in the form of betrayals.

Mafia remake launches August 28, 2020; Mafia II: Definitive Edition launches May 19, 2020

A leaked Microsoft Store listings have revealed first information and screenshots for the first two games in the Mafia trilogy.

Mafia: Trilogy consists of three titles: Mafia: Definitive Edition, a full remake of the original Mafia due out on August 28, 2020; Mafia II: Definitive Edition, a remaster due out digitally on May 19, 2020; and Mafia III: Definitive Edition, which is presumably also due out on May 19, but that is unconfirmed at this time as a listing has not leaked.
