some of my favorite movies that i watched in april
let me do one of these bc i enjoyed a lot of what i watched last month :-) actually, most of what i watched was great (to me etc etc) so i only mentioned a few. not in order, i loved them all.
1. morgane et ses nymphes (1971) absolutely incredible, theres literally just 01 male character and he’s a mess but other than that just morgane and her magic fairy girlies.. soooooooooo so so beautiful. just all i want in a movie... women, beauty, stunning locations, a freaking magic boat that takes you to another world... yes. and the ending is lovely.
2. folies meurtrières (1984) someone i follow & love said this is like if you take a vhs tape of a slasher and dropped it on water, added the score of halloween in the oddest tempo and held it under a candle to dry and that is.. incredibly accurate. had literally the time of my life watching this. it put me in a trance and i never wanted to leave. so so sooooo good. very glad that i’m one of the people that has this kind of experience with murderdrone.
3. a geisha (1953) i have not stopped thinking about this movie and these characters, i never wanted to leave them. such a beautiful and sympathetic glimpse at the lives of two women who want to set boundaries in a world that doesn’t want them to. very understanding and bittersweet and GOOD.
4. time to love (1965) i’ve been eyeing metin erksan’s career since i watched the perfect female hamlet (1977) a while ago and i’m so happy to see that i still respond so well to it. i love his voice and style!!!! there’s this whimsical but dark aspect to it that i just adore. this was another one of those that put me in a trance, the sound of the rain and the MUSIC and these characters who want to be close to each other but fear it so. loved every second of it. a wonderful melodrama.
5. the queen of black magic (1981) this has EVERYTHINGGG. it’s a witch slash revenge movie that does not rely on scenes of assault (even if the mob that attacks murni is terrifying but then, well, it’s a scary mob afraid of a woman they see as a witch), i think it was the safest of those i watched so far so i definitely recommend to people who want to see a revenge movie but don’t want to suffer through strong scenes. it’s understanding of all of its characters, frankly. i found them quite charismatic and well anyway the GORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it’s so good. men b exploding, ripping out their own heads, getting eaten by bees etc. a great fucking time.
6. bahia blanca (1984) the way i responded to this movie just shows how broken my brain is rn but anyway!! nothing but respect to this pervert who was my most watched director of 2019!! i found this a rather beautiful melodrama set on an island so lots of beach scenes which sometimes is all i need in a movie. it also features a really interesting relationship between 2 sisters, one of which is lina romay so what else do you need. plus: a vengeful bride. i liked this the way i like bó’s movies aka it feels familiar to me, probably bc of the setting & the music.
7. simona (1974) an odd one. it is based on bataille’s story of the eye so you know what you’ll get (unless you’re me and not really familiar with it). i found it so strange and beautiful and tragic. it’s a dreamy world where time isn’t real and you just let yourself get lost in it for a little while.
