Jan. 7, 1932: Before a crowd of 15,000, Birger Ruud, 19, of Norway won the Olympic ski-jumping title at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. “Snow that had been stored in a shed today saved the greatest exhibition that the Third Olympic Winter Games have furnished to date,” reported The Times. Mr. Ruud’s rival for the top prize was Hans Beck, another 19-year-old from Kongsberg, Norway. “At the take-off Beck bolted upward in a mighty leap that was obviously sending him to a new record,” The Times said of his first jump. “Approaching the precipitous incline, he straightened out gracefully to complete a performance that bordered closely on perfection.” Mr. Beck lost by a single point.
