There’s a tiny YouTube channel that puts out these incredible good-length documentaries about the environment called Happen Films. They’re set in New Zealand and they do interviews with all kinds of people and my favorite is the one where it’s this one older man, maybe 70, 80 yrs old who dedicated his life to buying up land in New Zealand and letting it all go natural and letting the environment take it back and he’s been able to restore a bunch of natural places that way. Like there’s this plant there that if you don’t mow down will swallow whole acres and acres of land—but it serves a purpose. It is sun-dependent. So these people that laughed at him, thinking this land would just all be that one plant, ended up seeing this plant would shelter saplings and things and they would outgrow that plant and once there was shade the sun-loving plant would die and forest would take its place. So this man just by choosing not to develop the land and let it do its thing, restored so much. It’s wild and beautiful. And his story itself is incredible.
