How much is that doggie in the window? French Female Street Artist 'Zabou' Pays Tribute To The Pugs Of Broadway Market
The Pug Dog, accessory de la mode for the countrified urbanites, chirpy beggars and elderly left-wing dads that make Broadway Market a microcosm for all that's great about East London and The Union, has been iconified in the strip's first piece of proper street art.
French street art sensation Zabou was invited by Happenstance Gallery, who have taken up a residency at the delightful Stories Bar, to spruce up the abandoned structure next door with a mixture of homage and irony. Zabou, now living a 30-second dive from Regents Canal, had already noted the prevalence of the pug in this area (she has a pug street art piece on canal footpath just by Regents Studios) and jumped at the chance to immortalise the screw-faced canine through the faux-window panes of the mural.
In the picture, pug peers straight ahead, flanked by two 1950s vintage couples ecstatically enjoying a drink and a chat.he caption beside one of them anachronistically proclaims, 'Let's Get Wasted!'. The irony was not lost on the captivated passers-by; Stories, with its cultured bohemian vibe, a far cry from your run-of-the-mill boozer.
Otherwise it would not be so beloved of pug and their proud owners! To celebrate the Picasso of canines, Happenstance Gallery and Stories are offering a prize of a limited edition Zabou 'Pug Superhero' print to the best ''Me and my Pug'' picture emailed to [email protected] or tagged @happenstancegallery on Instagram.
