nonas never actually experienced the hardships the other survivors had when max was in reign, and thats cause she came in when charlie was in reign (and charlie was the one who kidnapped her anyways). im sure if she asked max about how he and charlie ended up in the constant, he’d explain that what happened in the “Final Act” video wasn’t what he wanted. THEY (the shadows) were the ones who took him and charlie into the constant.

i think she would only really hear about the horrible things he’s done through word of mouth from the others but now she just sees a pathetic old frail man who’s way too prideful for his own good. and honestly, thats a good reason to tease him. so although she’s aware he’s done horrible things, this is who he is now. he’s not the person he once was.

not only that, but her quotes towards him just ooze silly teasing: - Attacker- “Don’t make me noogie you, %s.” - Reviver- “Nice job, ya big walnut.” - Red Cap- “Let Max try it first.”- and although its unimplemented, - Twiggy Tree (old)- “Hey Max! This tree looks like you!”

I don't remember if i said this before so apologies but i loved your writeup on Winona and Maxwell. If Winona of all people, who understands her sister is currently trying to kill her because of Them, can't understand Maxwell is also an innocent party in this, then no character can. I so badly want fandom and canon both to lean into this take a lot harder because it's not so much redemption as it is escape from exploitation. They are Fae. Maxwell is 99 percent blameless. thank you for your post!

i do wish that the general opinion that winona hates/dislikes maxwell wouldnt be so common! i think ppl generally see that maxwell did [bad thing], so he must be blamed for everything. tho what those ppl fail to see is that maxwell was trick and exploited by THEM; he was not in as much control as he lets on (his pride and all). and this may be my own interpretation of his title, but his “Puppet King” title has a double meaning? he puppets his shadow loggers/miners/etc., but he was also a puppet to THEM. he was a king that was a puppet.

and thats where charlie is rn. she’s a puppet to THEM. so if winona can still want charlie back after she tried to kill her and her friends by stealing their fire, shadow fisting them in the dark, leaving them to starve, subjecting them to the terrors of the forge and the gorge, then winona can definitely vibe with maxwell.

because it’s not entirely charlies fault. not maxwells either. its THEM.
