Hakuouki Headcanons: Dating [Harada Sanosuke]
AN: I was actually about to get to this beautiful man before you requested him, anon! It just means that I post it faster. I’m happy that you like my work!
Thank you, everyone! Especially for putting up with my brief hiatus while abroad. I’ll try to post more soon! I just landed in the US not too long ago, so I’m going to get settled (and unpacked) before I post again!

Honor is an ingrained trait in all who follow the bushido way, but none in the Shinsengumi embody the mean of honor and manliness quite like Sanosuke. :P
Sano likes to get to know the person before becoming more involved in the person. His disposition is already quite gentle and sweet towards women in the first place.
You would probably be the daughter of another lower ranked Shinsengumi member, or a maid? Definitely a civilian in a sense, but one that Sano gets to see every day, either during patrol or while you’re running around the compound doing chores to keep the place clean. Basically, he starts off as a friend until you and him both realize that you hold an attraction towards one another.
It doesn’t take long for Sano to realize that he has feelings towards you, actually. Sano likes a pretty/cute face, but he tends to care more about if you have a heart of gold or not. He often observes that you have a pretty cheerful and helpful disposition, something that warms his heart. But you’re also not the type to lay down and take any type of abuse from another. This fierceness attracts him the most. Before Sanosuke knows what hit him, he’d fallen for you.
It’s true that while he may indulge in the occasional pretty woman, Sano is a truly devoted man. Once he knows that his feelings are true, he dives into pursuing you with all of his being.
Whether you fall for him before he does or after, it’s rather sweet that Sano seemingly always appears after you work to escort you safely home. That he’s always ready to buy you dessert, or just there to lend a hand. It got weird at some point, and you go out of your way to tell Sano that him hovering over you was a little too much.
Of course, Sano gets a little embarrassed over this, but he respectfully backs off a little.
And despite yourself, you find yourself missing him. You miss how Sano, tall and silent, and charming... and firm... Sanosuke... had always been there to help you, to just walk you to places... how just having him near you made you feel safe... secure. The more that Sano stayed away, the more you felt his absence... and you realize that Sano had become much more than a friend at that point.
One week passes, and you don’t see Sano any of those days... another week passes, and you find that your eyes are shifting to places that Sano used to stand and wait for you. You miss his teasing and his light flirting. You miss him.
“Y/N.” You jump, startled at how suddenly that voice made your heart race, and your head practically flies off at how quickly you turn so that your eyes can find him.
There’s a playful smirk on Sano’s face as he greets you, a noticeably large set of bandages decorated his torso, covering more than his usual bandage wrapped around his abdomen.
There’s a cocky smirk on his face as he asks, “Miss me?”
You bite your bottom lip in order to hold back the sob that seemed to want to escape you, and your hands are shaking because of your disbelief.
You want to yell. You want to scream. You want to hug him. You want to kiss him. You want to throw him down and have your way with him…
You settle on hitting him with whatever you had on hand… which just so happens to have been a broom.
“Sanosuke, you jerk!” You sob, repeatedly striking him with the broom handle as tears streamed down your face. “Where did you go? I was worried sick!!!”
Sano, for his part, didn’t look all that bothered with you hitting him with the broom. After what he’d been through, your hits seemed painless.
His eyes softened as your strikes slowed to a complete halt, and you just stood in front of him pouting and bawling your eyes out. Sano doesn’t get to do much but brush your tears away before you’re throwing your arms around him.
“Sorry, Y/N.” He mutters, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into a deep embrace.
Neither of you ever truly discussed it, but through unspoken words, the two of you knew that you loved one another.
After his return, Sano resumes his old habits of walking you from destination to destination, helping you with your chores, and of watching you work. Of course, now that he’s sure of your feelings regarding him, Sano will sometimes swoop in to press affectionate kisses to any part of your body that he can reach. He doesn’t really care if you’re dirty or sweaty. All he wants to do is show you that he loves you.
Sano’s favorite thing to do, however, is to ambush you with intimacy… At first, it’s a little weird that he seems to enjoy getting you two alone. And then he starts pressing fervent kisses on the space between your neck and shoulder… and oh… you realize what it is that he wants to do.
Because of the fact that you both live in areas that people can walk in on you, you often end up cuddling instead… at least until you two are absolutely sure that nobody would walk in. And then the cuddles turn into lingering caresses… and then his hand goes there… and it basically goes down hill from there.
It takes only a week of “dating” until Sano confesses to you about the wound on his stomach. The true story behind the ghastly scar on his abdomen. He expected you to shun him… to make fun of him. You do none of that. Instead, you gingerly make a point of placing your palm upon his stomach, lightly tracing over the area. “I’m glad that you weren’t successful that day. I would have never been able to meet you if you had been.”
A boyish elation lights up his face as Sano practically tackles you with his love. “I’m glad, too.”
