Don't shop at Harding's in West Michigan because they're unapologetic capitalistic douchebags that don't care about people with special needs.
Harding's Friendly Market is a modest chain of grocery stores in the western half of the state of Michigan. This chain of stores exploits some of their special-needs employees and doesn't care about ensuring their happiness. If Harding's customers truly knew how their employees were treated, I seriously doubt they would continue providing them with business. Here's why:
I began working at one of the Harding's locations while I attended college. I started off making minimum wage (which was $7.45 per hour) as a grocery bagger. At Harding's, the baggers are required to give the customers carry-outs, meaning the baggers carry the customer's groceries out to their cars for them. In addition, it was a fireable offense to accept tips for doing carry-outs. While a draconian rule, especially considering that most of the baggers are poor college students, Harding's does more fucked up shit to mentally challenged people.
While working as a bagger, I met a few other baggers who I learned had been employed by Harding's for more than 10 years. In fact, one of the baggers I had known had been with the company for 20 years! Bagging groceries the entire freaking time! What's the catch? At this particular location, two of the three employees I knew that had been there for more than 10 years were in some way mentally challenged. Harding's had never promoted them to a position higher than bagger, despite 10-20 years of loyal employment. Here's where it gets fucked up. At Harding's, baggers are ineligible for pay raises, because the only way to get a pay raise is to be promoted. So basically, they have some mentally challenged employees that have loyally worked for the company for 10-20 years that are STILL GETTING PAID MINIMUM WAGE. This is just one store, of which there are thirty locations throughout the west side of Michigan, all driven by the same corporate douchebag policies. So there are likely many other exploited mentally challenged people currently being "employed" by this ridiculous company.
During my talking with some of these employees, I found out that two of them had either went to the store director, or to the union (holy shit, right? These stores are actually unionized) about the issue. Neither were able to do anything for these people. In my opinion, just because it is technically legal to pay someone minimum wage, even after 20 years of employment, that doesn't make it right. To me, this is extremely unethical business practice.
Now Harding's is considered the local alternative to bigger chains like Wal-Mart or Meijer. In my opinion, it's the duty of the smaller chains to actually treat their employees with some dignity. As a consumer, I expect that by supporting a local business, I can take comfort in knowing that my money isn't going towards exploiting people. Harding's has taken worker exploitation to an extreme low by exploiting those that are already disadvantaged. Their business philosophy (per their website) states that they strive for the best customer service from their "friendly" employees. It's impossible to have a genuinely happy and friendly employee when they're treated as subhuman.
Fuck Harding's and they're capitalistic douchebaggery.

Actually, a beanie with a facemask just seems like a good idea in general. Sometimes you fall down while you’re wearing sweatpants.
