Hardknott Roman Fort
Hardknott Roman Fort, also known as Mediobogdum in the Ravenna Cosmography is a Roman Fort constructed at the Hardknott Pass in the Lake District, Cumbria, England to guard against raids by the Scots and Brigantes - Travel HeritageDaily - Archaeology News
I’ll bet this would be a hardship post for anyone posted there. It’s pretty bleak. Beautiful, though.
Hardknott Roman Fort, Cumbria
The fort, built between 120-138 AD, is on Hardknott Pass overlooking the River Esk, guarding an ancient Roman road that links Ravenglass and Ambleside. The fort is identified in the Ravenna Cosmography (c. 700 AD) as the Mediobogdo fort (or more correctly Mediobogdum). The fort walls contained barracks, a commandant’s house and granaries.
The site is located on the western side of the Hardknott Pass in the English county of Cumbria.
Lake District Calendar - The final 12 have been chosen
We've decided to go with Hardknott Fort for our 12th image in the Lake District Calendar 2014. Its a slightly different crop than earlier - Diana thought the cloud activity was a bit too much. If you'd like to see all the images for our calendar, just click the original photograph link in the right hand side. For the the first time though, here's a summary of the images we have chosen and the dates they will apply to:
January - Tarn Hows
February - Scafell from Mosedale
March - Little Langdale
April - Little Stand from Duddon Valley
May - Birks Bridge
June - Yewbarrow
July - Langdale Pikes
August - Ennerdale
September - Coniston Water
October - Hardknott, Eskdale
November - Seathwaite Tarn
December -Old Man of Coniston
Now we just need to get the final print ready images to Sally Bamber who has already prepared the calendar artwork for us. I'm also working on a PayPal button to allow pre-orders from this site.
