Standing Stones, Callanish, Isle of Lewis, Scotland
More archive material from my trip to the Outer Hebrides in 2013. OK, they are rather a long way from the Lake District, but they are still very impressive and I don’t see why this blog can’t go on extra Cumbrian excursions now and again.
Silecroft Beach
OK, it’s time for me to get snapping again. I didn’t have the Nikon to hand when this moment inspired me to grab an iPhone panoramic. Silecroft beach is at the very south west tip of the Lake District. Very few people go and you can walk for miles - well perhaps 2 miles before the sand turns to pebble. No mountains in this picture - those bumps are shadowy sand dunes - however shrouded by mist is Black Combe, a fairly easy climb but well rewarded with fine views to sea.
Frosty Morning on the River Lickle
No I’m afraid we haven’t started on the next calendar, but I am searching through Lightroom to find a suitable photograph for my annual christmas card. I don’t think this one is quite lake districty enough for the card, but I’m still rather fond of it. It is of the river Lickle (again) taken one February morning a few years ago now.
Lickle Valley in January
Is there really a place called the Lickle Valley? Yes there is, and its every bit as quaint as the name suggests. Probably most well known for its charming local, the Blacksmith Arms, the Likkle Valley is in the western Lake District between the Duddon Valley and Coniston. The hill in the background is Caw, and following the ridge to the right you soon arrive at Coniston Old Man, via Dow Crag. This is how it looked at 9am on January 19th, 2015.
Ed: Received by email in response to my post. It is spelt Lickle, meaning winding [I had called it Likkle initially]. A neighbour has a history book of the interpretation which is very interesting. In old Norse it was spelt Lykkja, and in 1140 it was spelt Licul. It was called this because of the river flowing into oxbow bends down the bottom end of the valley where at some stage the river was diverted at Tenants meadow which is down at Croglinghurst.
The Bridge at Hall Dunnerdale, Duddon Valley
Back on topic with some lake district imagery, though not a new one. This is a piccy I took when we lived in the Duddon Valley, in Ulpha. There are a few historically interesting boundary stones and milestones like this in the area. If you carry on up the Duddon and turn right you'll hit the famous 3 shires stone, marking the place where Cumberland, Westmoreland and Lancashire meet (well met actually, before it all became Cumbria).
Suainaval, Uig Peninsula, Isle of Lewis
If you liked the last post, here's the other photograph I took at the same location, just a few moments prior. This one cost me wet feet as I stumbled through boggy ground, wearing inappropriate shoes as usual.
Suainaval, Uig Peninsula, Isle of Lewis
Sadly our plans to follow up on last year's successful Lake District Calendar 2014 have not come to fruition, but we are hopeful to come back strong with a 2016 calendar. In the meantime, we offer some Scottish landscape photography, based on Phil's recent camper van trip to the inner and outer hebrides. The above image of Loch Suinaval and hill of the same name were taken at dusk, and the glint of light is the camper van. Suinaval is on the west coast of Lewis, almost as far West as it is possible to go in the United Kingdom, and arguably the most North Westerly point.
Lake District Calendar 2014 - New Stock - Individually Signed
We sold out of our first print run, and have just received new stock. This will be our final print run of the calendar, which means this first Lake District Calendar will be a limited edition of only 300.
As a final bonus, all calendars ordered through this website before the end of 2013 will be individually signed, by at least one of the artists. Order now via this link if you'd like to be assured of receiving one of our signed calendars.
Lake District Calendar 2014 Exhibition Moves to Natterjacks Gallery, Ulverston
We're delighted to announce that our exhibition of original art for the Lake District Calendar 2014 is now available to view daily in Ulverston at Natterjacks Gallery on Queen Street in Ulverston. We even managed the above mention in the local paper to announce our opening night last Thursday.
Although most of the smaller paintings have now been sold, Diana's large canvases are all still in the exhibition (apart from "Scafell from Mosedale Valley" which sold earlier in the year). A number of the photos are still showing and some reprints of those that have sold will be added shortly.
Opening times for Natterjacks Gallery are Monday-Friday 3pm-10pm
Lake District Calendar 2014 - Launch Exhibition
We had a great exhibition of the original art and launch of the calendar over the weekend, and received some very kind feedback from visitors, such as this one from Louise Thislethwaite:
"Gordon and I were bowled over by your photos. They're absolutely stunning and artistically and technically brilliant. Hugely impressive. Diana's paintings were also incredible - almost like tapestries."
So thank you very much to everyone who came along, and for all the other support we received over the weekend and in the preparation. Diana was pleased to sell 2 more paintings, which makes 4 in total from this collection, including the one that was bought while she was still painting it! Phil was pleased to sell 3 photographs during the exhibition. Although the photographs and paintings are still hanging at 38a The Gill, they're moving this week to Natterjacks Gallery in Ulverston. We also had a lot of take up for our calendar, and have decided to do a reprint as we're going to sell out soon at this rate.
Reminder of this weekend's exhibition
We have stock of calendars. We're ready to start posting out the pre-orders. Well done to Lauren and Steve who got their orders in within minutes of my earlier post. Yes Steve, you did just sneak in first, but then Lauren is in the US.
Above is a reminder of what 38 1/2 The Gill looks like for those who are coming along this weekend. Diana and I will be popping over later today to do most of the hanging, with final adjustments on Friday.
If you haven't ordered a calendar yet and would like one, the link is now in bright green top right. I've tested that you can change the delivery address during the payment process if its a present for someone else. We're currently exploring the option of gift wrapping - any interest in that?
Lake District Calendar 2014 - Available to Order Now
The calendar is with the printers. The PayPal account is set up. The venue is booked. We're open to take orders.

Lake District Calendar 2014 Goes to Print
We sent the calendar artwork off to the printers today, which was very exciting and so we should have physical copies in about a week to 10 days. Pre-orders will be available any day now via this website, as soon as we get the PayPal button working. The price will be £10, inclusive of UK postage. The calendar is quite large at A3 size in landscape format, with layout as shown above. Mostly the large image is the painting, but in a few cases we have the photograph as the main. In one or two cases unfortunately Diana didn't have time to paint a full size oil on canvas, but has instead created drawings or pastels, so there are no gaps. I hope you like it and that you still have a few gaps in your christmas present lists!
Lake District Calendar - The final 12 have been chosen
We've decided to go with Hardknott Fort for our 12th image in the Lake District Calendar 2014. Its a slightly different crop than earlier - Diana thought the cloud activity was a bit too much. If you'd like to see all the images for our calendar, just click the original photograph link in the right hand side. For the the first time though, here's a summary of the images we have chosen and the dates they will apply to:
January - Tarn Hows
February - Scafell from Mosedale
March - Little Langdale
April - Little Stand from Duddon Valley
May - Birks Bridge
June - Yewbarrow
July - Langdale Pikes
August - Ennerdale
September - Coniston Water
October - Hardknott, Eskdale
November - Seathwaite Tarn
December -Old Man of Coniston
Now we just need to get the final print ready images to Sally Bamber who has already prepared the calendar artwork for us. I'm also working on a PayPal button to allow pre-orders from this site.
Hebridean Photography - Rubha Robhanais (Butt of Lewis) Lighthouse - Isle of Lewis - Outer Hebrides
I don't spend all my life in the Lakes. Currently in the camper van in the Outer Hebrides, travelling, working (BT WiFi-with-Fon is amazing) and taking photographs. So, as a brief distraction from our Lake District Calendar project, here's a piccy taken at sunrise yesterday morning at the most northerly point of the Isle of Lewis. We nearly lost our dog over these cliffs the previous night when he caught a smell of a rabbit.
Exhibition of Original Art and Launch of Lake District Calendar 2014
Location: 38½ The Gill, Ulverston, Cumbria (Google Map Link) Dates: 23-24 November 2013, 9am - 5pm
No its not a fictional location out of a Harry Potter novel. 38½ The Gill really does exist, and its in Ulverston in South Cumbria. We're holding the exhibition during Dickensian Weekend which has run for many years in Ulverston and is very popular. Please stop by and meet Diana and myself and come and take a look at the paintings and photographs.
