My Patio Dreams vs. My DIY Skills (Spoiler: The Patio Is Winning)
Pinterest lied to me. Or at least severely underestimated how hard it is to build a patio without accidentally creating a mini pond every time it rains.
The Project: I wanted a cozy stone patio off the back door—something for morning coffee and summer dinners. I bought pavers, watched one YouTube tutorial, and assumed I was basically a contractor. Three weekends later, I have a lopsided mess that drains toward the house.
The Reality Check: After admitting defeat, I browsed local hardscaping examples and found Fox Landscaping’s Hardscaping Services page. Their projects have actual level surfaces and proper drainage—who knew that was important? Their guide on base layers and frost heave (an Ohio specialty) made me realize why my DIY attempt failed.
New Plan:
Permeable pavers. Because Ohio rain doesn’t play.
A fire pit zone. Because s’mores > uneven stepping stones.
Hiring someone who owns a level. A novel concept.
Final Thoughts: Sometimes, you just need to call in the pros. My ego is bruised, but my future patio will be functional.
