Why We Love Hardware
When it comes to electronics, I consider myself more of a hardware guy. I would much rather build a relay into my system instead of using some type of semiconductor. Tell any engineer this and they would laugh at it. Why would anyone want to use an outdated technology when they could use something modern? The answer is simple. I like the way that it sounds. A relay gives you a nice satisfying click when it switches on and off. If nothing else, I have confidence when I hear that sound. The same rule applies when I’m spinning a knob on my mixer or when I’m am starting and stopping the speed on my turntable. I simply could not do with an electronic version that does not make any sound at all. This is why many hardware people love their hardware, no matter how ridiculous and space absorbing it seems to be. The real time feedback along with the tactile feel cannot be replaced by soft pads and emulated touch screens. In the future, these two ideas will be their own biggest competitors – just as it currently is right now. http://createdigitalmusic.com/2014/07/elektron-korg-volca-jam-quick-thoughts-love-hardware/
