Hariko are traditional papier-mâché dolls and figures made by shaping wetted washi onto a wooden forms. Artisans like Hashimoto Shōichi, who is the twenty-first head of hariko producer Honke Daikokuya, have been making the often humorous figurines in the Takashiba district of Kōriyama in Fukushima Prefecture for centuries.
