Any tips for spotting butches irl, the ones that are less obvious?

Yeah I actually do have some!!! None of this is really specifically for butches, but just generally how I try and spot fellow queer people

First, I know you said less obvious, but sometimes it just is. I know the community is divided on the topic of being able to “spot” a gay person, and it definitely doesn’t work for everyone, but sometimes you can just tell someone’s identity because they’re not trying to hide it!

In general I think these are a lot of little things that are easy for queer people to pick up on, but those who “aren’t in the know” are usually really oblivious to. I was literally talking to a very visibly butch friend yesterday about how her coworkers keep asking her if she had a boyfriend, and she was confused because she thinks she looks visibly queer. I’ve been told by many queer people that I look lesbian, but with the vast majority of straight people it goes over their head. People see what they want to see, and if they don’t expect lesbian, then they don’t see lesbian.

Second, flagging!! It’s definitely a bit less reliable today than in the past because of social media and the way things go in and out of trend and fashion- everyone and their mum has a bloody carabiner these days. But if they have multiple flags (carabiner, hankies, rings, pins, lace codes, whatever) then I’d use your judgement and really think about it

Think about the way people interact socially, and the type of language they use. To people I’m not familiar with, if the topic of relationships ever came up then I’d typically use gender neutral pronouns and terms such as “(future) partner”, so that’s something I often mentally note when others I’m talking to say it as well.

Do they engage in/talk about queer media? Do they frequent queer places? Do they have gay friends? Do they care about queer issues and are they familiar with queer history? Obviously these all only apply to people you somewhat know, but there’s lots of different things I’d say you could consider if you’re trying to tell if someone’s a butch (/generally lesbian/queer) and sometimes it all just adds up! Depending on how you think they’d take it, you could just buck up and ask them if you really want to be sure (though I’d only recommend doing this with people you’re aquatinted with + are fairly sure is somewhat out/ has “signs” of being queer).

Lastly I also feel like engaging in a widespread, diverse queer community or space helps with identifying others, as it helps with the above suggestions. If it’s a local community, you can learn faces and trends that are popular within them. If it’s online then you can see the spectrum of ways people express their butch-ness and note similarities

Anyway I hope this all makes sense and is at least somewhat helpful!!! Good luck with your butchspotting o7

can you please share the list of pros and cons of vampirism vs lycanthropy that you came up with?? i’m trying to explain why werewolves are just as hot as vampires (perhaps hotter than) to my girl and she’s not getting it so i need a qualified and trustworthy source (you) to vouch for me!! plssss

I CAN SOOOOO VOUCH FOR YOU I am so happy to be a trusted source for this. Now my list of reasons I’d rather be a werewolf and my list of reasons I think werewolves are hot are very different but. I’m here for both

Okay so, pros of being a vampire (all subject to change depending on depiction):

-bats are cool as hell, sexy vibe, gothic aesthetic, hunter/prey thing, indefinitely more rep in media, typically depicted as beautiful, regeneration

cons:

-no garlic, no sunlight, no mirrors, no photos, no silver (sometimes), no crosses, no holy water and you have to drink blood. Which to me is the biggest downside. I just can’t get behind it

Grey area:

-typically depicted as solitary, slowed mortality or immortality, undead

Pros of being a werewolf (also subject to change depending on depiction):

-wolves are cool as hell, found family pack thing, enhanced senses and animalistic features, symbolism with the moon, transformation and wild animals, hunter/prey thing, regeneration

Cons:

-silver, wolfsbane, possibly experiencing black outs/out of control moments

Now why I think they’re hotter than vampires is probably mostly due to personal preference- but isn’t everything? For most things that make a vampire hot, I feel there is some werewolf equivalent (I say most because I can’t think of something they can’t compare to). Each have the allure of danger, the appeal of being the prey to something that is above you in the food chain but while vampires are generally portrayed as being one with their identity, lycanthropes are in majority shown to have some kind of power struggle with it.

It depends on depiction, but the idea of a hidden evil thing within- a thing that is uncontrollable, but constantly craves. Threatening the individuals humanity on a chance to take over on a whim- bubbling away under the skin, itching to get out. Could turn dangerous at any second- even if it does like you. And it has the power to not only drain you, but tear you limb from limb. It just takes a little slip in control; desiring you too much or too close to a full moon. And it kills you not because it needs you for substance- no more than eating a wild squirrel or just a normal steak- but because it wants to.

Then, for more personal preference- I like more how they are typically thought to look and behave. Vampires are largely regal and elegant, but werewolves are usually normal people and non distinguishable. They aren’t often highlighted for a supernatural beauty, but if you’re into overpowering dominance, strength, claws, defined canines, body hair, and a hidden possession and obsession that has the potential to turn around and bite you in the ass (both figuratively and literally), werewolves could be for you.

So long story short- while vampires are symbolic of sexual desires, werewolves are all that and then a struggle to repress put on top. The “I shouldn’t be doing this/ shouldn’t be into this” is werewolf 101. Plus hungry possessive werewolf sec sounds hot.

In conclusion I’m 1000000% team werewolf, thank you for coming to my talk
