“Well now, lets have a look here.” Unikko, our resident medical rootling, has decided it is time to examine Harmaa’s leg. “Ah! Well look at this!”

“What!?” Harmaa is not as calm as she should be, but not everyone is a fantastic patient.

“It’s ready to come off.”

“MY LEG!?”

Once Unikko has stopped giggling and muttering in his native language, he assures her, “No, dear Harmaa, your cast.”

“Oh... of course, the cast... yeah. That. Mhm.”

One cast off, one healed leg, and many happy rootlings!

“Now remember to take it easy and build your strength back up.”

“Yes sir, mister doctor, sir!”

“Look at me! I’m all better! I could jump for joy!”

“No!” “Don’t!” “Harmaa-Laith!” “Oh my leaf!”

Cue some fernling giggles. “I won’t, I won’t! Oh, thank you Unikko, I’m so glad you’re here now!”

“Yes, we are all so glad you’ve joined us, at the best possible moment too!”

“Ah, yes, and as I recall you had to cut your vacation short to come home because of that incident. I wonder, if I can make that up to you in some way?”

“Oh now don’t you worry, I’m just glad that Harmaa is okay now. I was so worried the whole flight home! I love my family, and it was nerve wracking to be away from them, and to see Harmaa was hurt when I was away. Oh.”

“Well, fret no longer, she is well and I think she has learned her lesson, don’t you?”

“Oh... ah... you don’t know Harmaa well yet.”

“Oh dear. I see what you mean.”

“Have at, foul fiend!”

“Aha!”

Thus rings out the clacking of crutches-turned-swords, and the eventual yelp of pain when someone gets their frond whacked.

“OW!”

A Muffin Ordeal

Miss Speck has called the rootlings together to inform them of her displeasure that someone had dared to indulge in their repast prematurely.

“Now, I know everyone here loves muffins-”

“Not the healthy ones!”

“Basil!”

“Sorry.”

“As I was saying, I know everyone here loves muffins, however we had agreed to share it together and instead there is a big bite taken out of it! If the guilty party confesses now, the rest of us will forgive you.”

And not a sound was heard, not even the crickets. The rootlings all looked around at one another, but no one confessed their guilt.

“Maybe it wasn’t one of us?” Ventured Harmaa, looking at the muffin skeptically. “I know our witch loves these.”

As they all turn to me I laugh, “Nope. Afraid not,I have my own full sized muffins. Of which I’ve had too many already.”

“Then there is but one thing to do!” Basil declared, with a good deal of enthusiasm.

“We must, investigate!”

“Psst.... where did he have that hidden?”

Ignoring the peanut gallery, Basil continued. “When all else fails, investigate! Excuse me if I may examine the crime scene here... mhm... mhm... aha!”

“And....?”

“That my dear Speck, is—”

“Say elementary and I’m shoving that pipe where the—!”

“Harmaa!” Speck sighed and shook her head. “Basil, on with it.”

“Basil you really shouldn’t smoke, it’s not good for you.”

“Oh, it’s not mine. It’s Speck’s.”

“Hey!”

Following Specks arrival was an unpacking party, and general hubbub of catching up and getting to know Unikko a little more.

But things wrapped up quickly to let Harmaa rest.
