These were part of the ejection mechanism but I think they've largely done away with on modern planes. The purpose of it was mainly to protect the pilot's face from wind blast on ejection. On the cover the canopy is also shown as flying off in one piece but on some planes the canopy is now shattered as part of the ejection process. DC Thomson.
