To be honest, the early rock music does need something extra to drag us in. Maybe that's why we seem so responsive, for instance, to the tune in the link by Del Shannon, since the composition continues to sound out of this world. While I could agree with a cheeky assertion this could be seen as an early attempt at a synthpop song, one must observe the hit still fit within the scene of the early 60's, but the added soundscapes do give the piece a certain eeriness, which many developed later on. Del Shannon also did that, though I think he continues to be in the same league as Procol Harum and The Moody Blues, i.e. he kept doing great work, yet his greatest hit tended to overshadow the fine discs he did after that.

One aspect of the 60's rock I didn't have a chance to mention might be that the things changed so fast many ended up in a nostalgia circuit by the period's end. True, Del Shannon, you probably guessed I'm discussing him thanks to the link, doesn't really deserve this statement. He had a peculiar career that wavered between chasing his biggest hit and being one of the most unusual early 60's rockers. I would claim he could form a duet with Roy Orbison, though I think even the big O would ask him not to be that down. Yes, here's something vaguely sinister about his songs, they feel like the dispatches of the ghosts that continue to lurk in the present – I am actually calling him the early hauntologist. Moreover, I still think he deserved a Roy Orbison-like comeback.
