Film after film: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (dir. Laura Poitras, 2022)

A film worth every award, this documentary has a few core strands that collapse within the biography of Nan Goldin, probably the most influential artist in my life, one to whose photos I was exposed to in my early 20s. Poitras's film documents her mission of bringing awareness to the evil source of funding coming from the Sackler family, who run the incredibly successful financially, and equally as deathly, opiate-based medicine industry. This is inextricably embedded within situations from Goldin's life, with a poignant story of her older sister's death, her parents demonstrating different intensities of denial and, in the end, providing some emotionally cathartic moments to the "biological" family story, her own experience of a violently abusive partner, her friends dying of AIDS. It's my favorite film of 2022.
