This question made me pause because in every Modern AU stories featuring LBH, he’s doing considerably well for himself. Or at least getting by. I can’t help but think that it’s because the authors want to put him in a position of power similar to his original role in the novel. I often have mixed feelings about that because in canon LBH has the Protagonist Halo and System on his side. Hard to translate that to modern au.
But since you are specifically asking if LBH is the type to peak in high school, the answer is yes and no?
It’s true that the LBH in the feel like I’m living a teenage dream story struggle academically. He is self aware enough to know that he wouldn’t be able to get a scholarship with his grades alone. His athletic performance are good enough that he has a realistic chance to get scouted. It really depends on LBH’s part if he wish to go to college first or join a professional football team right away. I can see him become a successful athlete.
LBH is not afraid of the grind. We got textual evidence of this where he endured years of being homeless, SQQ’s abuse, Endless Abyss and daily fights with LQG. In modern AU, no matter what he decided, LBH would stuck it out. He might pursue other things. As long as he make ends meet, that’s good enough.
But if we’re talking about adulthood, I’m afraid this is where the real issue lies.
LBH, to put it simply, is immature. He has lots of issues. His understanding of how relationships works is… skewed, to say the least. It’s only a matter of time before he misread a situation and cross boundaries. I don’t see him have anyone he could consider a true friend. Maybe LBH has a few people he thinks are his friends, but in reality they are just being polite towards him and don’t get in his way. LBH is attractive enough so there should be some people interested. But it’s his obsessive tendencies that made LBH truly dangerous.
LBH desires emotional connection. It is what gives his life meaning. Once he find that person (or so he thinks), he made his world revolve around them, and expect the other person to do the same. Any relationship his object of obsession has outside of him is a threat in LBH’s eyes. There is no room for anything else. Who knows how far he is willing to go to feel secure, or what could be the trigger to make him spiral. Something has to give in the end, and it won’t be pretty.
To sum it up, LBH will most likely able to get by / support himself after graduating high school, but his life would feel empty because he tied his entire self worth to whoever caught his eye and that obsession would eventually eat away his world/life, hurting not just himself but also the poor soul he fixated on.
I wouldn’t call that a good life. Would you?
