sonny knows what it’s like to have an embarrassing parent. does it really need to be said? macclean, anyone that knows the name knows who ewan macclean is, notorious drunkard and shameless cheater. the alcoholic father of many children, some not even by his own wife, and the father of sonny. the thing is, sonny isn’t the only one with an embarrassing parent, boot hill seems to be rife with them, and he’s looking orion hart’s mother right now. eleanor hart and ewan macclean seem to be two sides of the same coin. she’s made her home in the bucking horse, where sonny works, while ewan has made his in orion’s bar. rarely does he ever see his father in his own bar, he likes to believe it’s because pater has enough shame not to shame sonny in his place of work, but he knows the reason why, his father tells it to him every time he has to pick him up from the coyote’s howl: he looks too much like bedelia. he can live in the same house as his wife, but she rarely takes notice of him unless he’s been gone too long; the son that has her red hair and her blue eyes? it’s like she’s looking right at me, ewan says, slurred and his head half out of sonny’s truck window.
so, he sympathizes with orion. leaning on the bar, observing eleanor, he tries to be patient as he waits for orion to show up and collect her mother, just as he has to come and collect his father often. they’ve come to an understanding, two working class kids with fucked up parents, one sonny didn’t think he’d eventually come to with orion. if his sardonic attitude was known around boot hill, her attitude was known for similar reasons. (maybe it’s sonny and orion that are two sides of the same coin.) he sighs audibly, cheeks puffing a little, when he finally hears the swing of the batwing doors. seeing orion has finally arrived, sonny lifts his chest off of the bartop and needlessly gestures towards her mother, “same shit different day, eh?”
